How we test internet providers and gear

Our rankings come from hands-on testing and hard data — not provider marketing. Here's exactly how we gather it and turn it into a score.

What each score weighs

Every provider gets a single score out of 10, built from four weighted factors. The weights never change to favor a paying partner.

Where our data comes from

We combine our own speed tests — run on identical hardware across real homes and ZIP codes — with third-party reliability data, published FCC coverage filings, and thousands of verified customer reviews. Advertised speeds are noted as advertised; measured speeds are labeled as tested.

Prices reflect each provider's standard consumer rates at the time of writing, before promotional discounts and before taxes and equipment fees, unless stated otherwise. Availability and pricing vary by address — always confirm with an address check.

How often we update

We re-check provider pricing and plans monthly, and re-test hardware whenever a new model ships or firmware materially changes performance. Every review shows its last-updated date. When rankings shift, we say why.
