Business VoIP: what your internet needs to deliver

A VoIP phone system rides on your internet — so call quality lives or dies by the connection. Here's what to look for.

The short answer

VoIP doesn't need much bandwidth — roughly 100 Kbps per call — but it's very sensitive to latency and jitter. Prioritize a low-latency, stable connection (fiber is ideal), enable QoS to give voice traffic priority, and make sure your upload speed can handle every simultaneous call.

What VoIP needs from your connection

Each concurrent VoIP call uses only about 85–100 Kbps in each direction, so raw bandwidth is rarely the problem. What matters is consistency: latency under roughly 150 ms, low jitter (variation in packet timing), and minimal packet loss. When any of those slip, calls sound choppy, clipped, or robotic even on a connection that tests fast on a speed check.

This is the counterintuitive part of VoIP: a 1 Gbps plan can deliver worse call quality than a 100 Mbps one if the faster plan has spiky latency and the slower one is rock-steady. Voice is a real-time medium, so steadiness beats speed. That's why diagnosing a call-quality problem starts with jitter and packet loss, not the download number.

Why upload and latency rule

Voice travels both ways, so your upload speed caps how many simultaneous calls you can hold — a real weakness of cable, whose uploads are a fraction of its downloads. A team of ten all on calls at once needs about 1 Mbps of clean upstream just for voice, and that has to coexist with everyone's cloud apps, backups, and file uploads. Fiber's symmetrical, low-latency connection is the best foundation for VoIP by a wide margin; fixed wireless can work for smaller teams but watch for jitter during peak-hour congestion, and cable is fine only if its upload comfortably covers your peak call count with room to spare.

Sizing and tuning your connection

Sizing VoIP is straightforward once you know your peak. Estimate the most simultaneous calls you'll ever run, multiply by about 100 Kbps each way, and then leave generous headroom for everything else on the network. A few tuning steps make the difference between "usable" and "excellent":

  • Enable QoS on your router to prioritize voice packets over downloads and backups, so a big file transfer never garbles a customer call.
  • Wire your phones or base station over Ethernet where you can — Wi-Fi adds jitter that hurts voice.
  • Put voice on its own VLAN to keep it isolated from congestion on the rest of the network.
  • Run a jitter and packet-loss test (not just a speed test) before you commit a plan to phones.

Keep the phones up when the internet isn't

Because VoIP rides your internet connection, an outage takes your phones down with it — a serious problem for any business that depends on being reachable. The fix is the same one that protects the rest of your operations: an automatic backup line on an independent network. Pair your primary connection with a 5G failover link and your calls keep flowing even when the main line drops.
