Cable vs. fiber: which should you choose?
Cable and fiber are the two wired options most homes choose between. Here's how they differ on speed, uploads, reliability and price — and when each wins.
Fiber beats cable on almost every technical measure — symmetrical speeds, lower latency and steadier reliability — and its pricing is often flatter. Cable's advantages are availability (it reaches more homes) and cheap first-year promos. If fiber is at your address, it's usually the better buy.
How the two technologies actually differ
The difference between cable and fiber comes down to what carries your data the last mile to the house. Cable runs on the same coaxial network that was built for television — a shared line that a whole neighborhood taps into. Fiber runs on thin strands of glass that carry pulses of light, and in most builds each home gets its own dedicated strand back to the provider's equipment. That single design choice cascades into almost every difference you'll notice: upload speed, latency, and how steady the connection feels at 8 p.m. on a Sunday.
Neither is exotic anymore. Cable reaches roughly 88% of U.S. homes and fiber is now past 45% and climbing fast, so in a growing number of addresses you'll actually get to choose. When you do, the tradeoffs below are what should decide it.
Speed: the headline numbers vs. what you'll feel
On download, both are fast enough that most households will never tell them apart. Cable tops out around 2 Gbps on the newest plans; fiber now sells 5 Gbps and even 8 Gbps tiers. But once you're past about 400 Mbps, extra download speed is mostly a spec-sheet flex — a single 4K stream needs 25 Mbps, and even a house full of them rarely clears 200. The number that changes your day-to-day is upload, and that's where the two split hard.

Fiber is symmetrical — a 1 Gbps plan gives you 1 Gbps up as well as down. For years that didn't matter, because homes mostly consumed the internet. It matters now: video calls, cloud backups, uploading footage, sending large files, and running anything self-hosted all lean on upload. If two people are on camera while a third pushes files to the cloud, a thin cable upload is the first thing to buckle. This single factor is why remote workers and creators should prioritize fiber even when cable's download number looks bigger.
Latency, and why gamers care
Latency is the delay before data starts moving — the thing that decides whether a game feels responsive and a video call stays in sync. Fiber typically lands in the 8–14 ms range and stays flat under load. Cable usually runs 15–30 ms and, more importantly, can spike when the shared line gets busy (a symptom called "buffer bloat"). For competitive gaming, live trading, or video calls that can't tolerate lag, fiber's steadier latency is a genuine advantage — not because the average is much lower, but because it doesn't wobble.
Reliability and the busy-hour problem
Because cable is a shared medium, your speed can dip during peak evening hours when the whole block is streaming — how much depends on how oversubscribed your local node is. Fiber's dedicated strand doesn't share bandwidth the same way, so it holds its rated speed whether it's 3 a.m. or prime time. Fiber is also less affected by weather and electrical interference. Cable reliability has improved a lot and is perfectly fine for most homes, but if you've ever watched your connection sag right when you sat down to relax, that's the shared-line effect, and fiber doesn't have it.
Data caps and price over two years
Most fiber plans have no data cap. Several cable providers still cap at 1.2 TB and charge for an unlimited add-on — enough for most homes, a real cost for heavy 4K households. On price, don't judge by month one. Cable leans on aggressive first-year promos that can undercut fiber's entry rate, then step up sharply in year two. Fiber pricing tends to be flatter and is more likely to include the equipment. Add the two years together before you decide which is "cheaper."
Watch the fine print either way: equipment rental, one-time install fees, and whether the promo requires autopay or a term contract can swing the real cost by $10–20 a month.
Which should you get?
Start by checking what's actually built to your address, because that decides the question more often than any spec does. If fiber is available and the price is within a few dollars, take it — symmetrical uploads, steadier latency, no cap, and flatter pricing make it the better long-term buy for nearly everyone. Choose cable when fiber isn't offered yet, when a first-year promo genuinely fits a tight budget, or when your household is download-only and you don't care about upload.
If you're a remote worker, gamer, streamer, or a busy multi-device household, lean fiber whenever you can get it. If you mostly stream and browse and cable is what's there, it's still a fast, capable connection — just go in aware of the data cap and the post-promo rate so year two doesn't surprise you.
