How satellite internet actually works

Every satellite provider sends your data up to a dish on your roof and back down through a satellite in orbit — but the orbit is everything. HughesNet and Viasat use geostationary satellites parked about 22,000 miles up. That altitude lets a single satellite cover a huge slice of the country, which is why they're available almost anywhere with a clear view of the southern sky. The catch is physics: your signal has to travel 22,000 miles up and 22,000 miles back for every request, and that round trip can't be sped up.

Starlink took the opposite approach, flying thousands of small satellites in low Earth orbit at roughly 340 miles. Any one of them covers far less ground, so it takes a whole constellation to blanket the map — but the data has a fraction of the distance to travel. That single design difference is why the three services feel so different to use, even though they all technically beam the internet from space.

Latency: the number that decides everything

If you only look at one figure, make it latency. Geostationary satellite lands at 600+ ms — over half a second of lag before anything responds. That's fine for downloading, streaming a pre-buffered movie, or loading a web page, but it makes video calls awkward, breaks most online gaming, and makes anything interactive feel like it's underwater. Starlink's low orbit brings latency down to roughly 25–60 ms, which is in the same ballpark as cable. That's the whole game: Starlink is satellite that can hold a Zoom call and a match of a shooter; HughesNet and Viasat are satellite that can't. If real-time use matters to you at all, this line alone settles it.

Speed and real-world performance

On raw speed, Starlink is also the fastest of the three, typically delivering 50–200 Mbps down depending on congestion and hardware, with enough headroom for a couple of simultaneous 4K streams. Viasat and HughesNet plans usually top out lower — often 25–100 Mbps on their better tiers — and can slow further at peak times. All three share one weakness compared with wired internet: uploads are modest, so pushing large files or backing up to the cloud is slower than you'd expect. For a rural home replacing DSL or nothing at all, any of them is a real upgrade; the question is how much interactive performance you need.

Data: "unlimited" with an asterisk

None of the three cuts you off cold anymore, but they manage heavy use differently. Starlink and Viasat advertise unlimited data but may deprioritize your traffic during congestion once you pass a threshold, so speeds can dip when the network is busy. HughesNet gives you a set amount of "priority" data each month and then keeps you connected at reduced speeds. In practice: if you stream a lot, read the priority-data and deprioritization fine print carefully, because the headline "unlimited" rarely means unlimited at full speed.

Weather, obstructions and reliability

All satellite needs a clear line of sight to the sky, and all of it can degrade in heavy rain or snow — geostationary services are especially prone to "rain fade" during storms. Starlink's dish also needs an unobstructed view overhead, so tall trees or a close roofline can cause dropouts; the Starlink app has an obstruction checker worth running before you commit. Snow can settle on any dish, though Starlink's has a heater. None of these is a dealbreaker in the country, but they're worth planning your dish placement around.

Equipment and up-front cost

This is where the geostationary pair claw back an advantage. Starlink asks you to buy the hardware kit up front (around $349, sometimes discounted), and you self-install it. HughesNet and Viasat typically lease the equipment with professional installation included, so you start with little or nothing out of pocket — but you're renting gear for as long as you're a customer. If you'd rather avoid a big first bill and don't mind a lease and a contract, that's a genuine point in their favor.

Which should you get?

If Starlink is available at your address, the price works, and your sky is clear, get Starlink — it's the best rural internet you can buy right now, and the low latency is worth the up-front hardware cost for almost everyone. Check the waitlist and the obstruction map first, since availability and sky view are the two things that stop it.

If Starlink is sold out, over budget, or blocked by trees, choose Viasat when you want unlimited-style data and slightly better speeds, or HughesNet when the lowest monthly price matters most. Just go in knowing that geostationary latency rules out smooth video calls and gaming — set your expectations there and both are perfectly usable for streaming and browsing.
