Internet bills are deliberately confusing. Here's what every line item means — and the two moves that actually bring the total down.

The short answer

Your bill is usually the promo rate plus equipment rental, fees and taxes. The two biggest levers you control are the year-two price jump and equipment fees — call to renegotiate the first, and buy your own modem to eliminate the second.
