The best long-range Wi-Fi extenders

For garages, back yards, thick walls and detached buildings. What actually reaches, and which "15,000 sq ft" claims to ignore.

The short answer

Indoors, the TP-Link RE815X ($114.98, tri-band Wi-Fi 6, up to 2,800 sq ft) is the strongest plug-in extender under $150, and the RE653BE ($199.99) is the Wi-Fi 7 pick. For a garage or yard, an outdoor unit like the WAVLINK AX3000 ($194.99) works best. For a large house, a mesh kit covers more than any extender.

By problem

  • Detached garage or shed: an outdoor extender on the house wall facing it, or an Ethernet run to an access point inside.
  • Thick walls: place the extender where it still has a clear path to the router, or use a wired backhaul (Ethernet or MoCA over coax).
  • Back yard: an outdoor unit like the WAVLINK or eero Outdoor 7.
  • Starlink: any extender works with Starlink Wi-Fi. For a mesh system, routers without a port need Starlink's Ethernet adapter.

Ignore the 10,000 sq ft claims

Cheap plug-in "boosters" advertising 10,000 to 15,000 sq ft, often new listings with a few dozen reviews, can't deliver that. Coverage depends on walls and distance, and a plug-in extender realistically covers one to two extra rooms. Stick to TP-Link, NETGEAR, ASUS or eero models with thousands of ratings. Why tri-band matters for range

A dual-band extender uses the same radio to talk to your router and to your devices, which roughly halves speed. Tri-band models like the RE815X and RE653BE use a separate band for the link back to the router, so they keep more speed at a distance.

How to install an outdoor extender

  1. Pick a spot on an outside wall facing the area you want to cover, under an eave if possible.
  2. Run an Ethernet cable from your router to the PoE injector indoors, then out to the extender.
  3. Mount the unit with the included bracket and point antennas toward the yard or building.
  4. Set it to access point mode in its app and use the same network name as your router.

When to run a cable instead

If the garage or building is more than about 100 feet away, or there are several walls in between, a buried outdoor-rated Ethernet cable to an access point will beat any wireless extender. Ethernet runs up to 328 feet without loss.

Questions

What is the longest-range Wi-Fi extender?

Among plug-in models, tri-band units like the TP-Link RE815X and RE653BE reach farthest. Outdoors, weatherproof units like the WAVLINK AX3000 or eero Outdoor 7 cover yards and outbuildings.

How do I get Wi-Fi to my garage?

Mount an outdoor extender on the house wall facing the garage, or run Ethernet to an access point in the garage for full speed.

What is the best Wi-Fi extender for thick walls?

A tri-band extender like the RE815X placed with a clear path to the router, or a mesh system with wired backhaul.

What is the best Wi-Fi extender for Starlink?

Any standard extender works. For a whole-home fix, Starlink's own mesh units or a third-party mesh with the Ethernet adapter work best.
