The short answer

Near towns and highways, T-Mobile AWAY ($160/mo unlimited, gateway included) is the best value. Off the grid, Starlink Roam is the only option that works without cell towers. Part-timers save most with AWAY's $10/mo pause; solo travelers may only need a phone hotspot.

Our picks

  • Best overall: T-Mobile AWAY. Cheapest unlimited plan with included gear, online in about five minutes, and a $10/mo pause. Full details in our T-Mobile AWAY review.
  • Best for off-grid: Starlink Roam. In a side-by-side test it matched AWAY's download speed with far lower latency (17 ms vs. 107 ms) and handled more devices. See our Starlink review and the Starlink Mini.
  • Best combo for full-timers: AWAY as the daily connection and Starlink for remote stops. Pause whichever you're not using.
  • Cheapest: your phone's hotspot, if one person mostly browses.

Boost campground Wi-Fi

Free campground Wi-Fi is often weak at your site. An outdoor extender mounted on the RV can pull it in and rebroadcast it inside:

How to choose

  1. Map your usual stops. Check T-Mobile's, Verizon's and AT&T's coverage maps; if most stops have strong signal from one carrier, start there.
  2. Estimate data. Remote work and nightly streaming means unlimited; browsing and email fit 100 to 200 GB.
  3. Count devices. A family with many devices does better with Starlink's router or a separate travel router.
  4. Plan for the off-season. AWAY's pause makes it cheap to keep year-round.

Power and mounting

  • Cell gateways draw little power and run fine on an RV inverter or a small power station.
  • Starlink's dish and router use more power; check your battery capacity if you boondock.
  • Mount or place the cell gateway high and near a window; for Starlink, find a spot with a clear view of the sky away from trees.
  • Run cables through a sealed entry plate rather than a window.

Data: how much does an RV household use?

UseData
An hour of HD streamingAbout 3 GB
An hour-long video callAbout 1–2 GB
A day of remote work with calls5–10 GB
Browsing and email, per dayUnder 1 GB
Rough averages; streaming in 4K uses more.

Other options worth knowing

  • Campground Wi-Fi: free but often slow; an outdoor extender helps.
  • Library and café Wi-Fi: fine for big downloads and updates on travel days.
  • Satellite phone plans: for emergencies only, not internet use.
  • T-Mobile 5G Home Internet: only for a fixed address; see its plans.
