The short answer

If you can't run a cable, the TP-Link AV1000 kit is the best value powerline adapter. Expect real speeds of 100 to 300 Mbps, far below the box number. The TP-Link AV2000 adds a passthrough outlet. If your home has wiring problems or you need fast Wi-Fi in several rooms, mesh Wi-Fi is usually better.

The picks

Best overall

TP-Link AV1000 (TL-PA7017 KIT)

HomePlug AV2 · gigabit port

A two-pack that plugs into outlets near the router and the far room, giving that room a wired gigabit port for a console or TV.

Worth knowing

No passthrough outlet, so it takes up the socket.

Passthrough

TP-Link AV2000 (TL-PA9020P KIT)

HomePlug AV2 MIMO · 2 gigabit ports · passthrough

Faster MIMO wiring support, two Ethernet ports and a built-in outlet so you keep the socket.

Worth knowing

Costs more than the AV1000 for gains that depend on your wiring.

Most reliable

devolo Magic 2 LAN

G.hn · gigabit port · passthrough

devolo's G.hn adapters often hold steadier speeds on older or noisier wiring.

Worth knowing

Pricier, and does not work with HomePlug adapters.

What speed to expect

The number on the box is a combined theoretical rate. In real homes, powerline adapters usually deliver 100 to 300 Mbps, sometimes more on new wiring. That's enough for 4K streaming and gaming, but it won't carry a gig plan.

Pro tip

Before buying, test the outlets you plan to use. Most retailers allow returns, so try a kit for a week. If speeds are low, a mesh system with wired or dedicated backhaul is the next step.

  • Same circuit: adapters work best on the same electrical circuit and breaker panel
  • No power strips: plug directly into a wall outlet; surge protectors cut the signal
  • Latency: usually steady, which makes powerline fine for gaming

How we picked

We compared published lab tests, owner reports and maker specs, and ranked on:

  • Real-world throughput reports
  • Passthrough outlet and ports
  • Standard: HomePlug AV2 or G.hn
  • Price

More on our process is in how we research.

Others we considered

  • Powerline Wi-Fi kits: Add a Wi-Fi access point at the far end; mesh usually does this better.
  • MoCA adapters: Use your coax cable instead of power wiring and are often faster.
  • Running Ethernet: Still the fastest and most reliable option; see our Ethernet cable guide.

Questions

Is powerline better than Wi-Fi?

Often for steady ping in a far room. Mesh Wi-Fi is better when you need fast wireless in several rooms.

Do powerline adapters work in apartments?

Usually, within the same unit. They rarely work between units.

Can I mix brands?

Only within the same standard. HomePlug AV2 adapters work together; devolo G.hn adapters only work with G.hn.
