Do you need mesh, or just a better router?
Mesh helps when one router can't reach the far rooms, a second floor or a backyard. In a smaller apartment, a single good router is usually enough and costs less. Our guide to mesh vs. an extender vs. a new router walks through the choice, and the best Wi-Fi routers covers single-box options.
Gaming on one console near the router? A gaming router may be the better buy.
Dual-band or tri-band?
Mesh units have to talk to each other as well as to your devices. Dual-band systems share the same radio for both, so speeds drop on the farthest unit. Tri-band systems keep a separate band for that link, which matters most on fast plans and in larger homes. A wired Ethernet link between units (wired backhaul) beats either, and every system above supports it.
Setting it up
Plug the main unit into your modem or provider gateway, and put the others halfway between it and the rooms you want to reach. If you rent a gateway, turn on bridge mode (see Xfinity bridge mode) or replace it with a modem you own. Our mesh setup guide has the steps, and you can test Wi-Fi room by room afterward.

For most homes, eero 7: Wi-Fi 7, multi-gig ports and simple setup. For 1 Gig and faster plans or larger homes, a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 system such as eero Pro 7 or TP-Link Deco BE63.
How many mesh units do I need?
Usually one unit per floor or about every 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, with the first unit plugged into your modem. A two-pack covers most apartments and small homes; three units suit larger or multi-story homes.

Not unless your plan is faster than about 1 Gig or you have many Wi-Fi 7 devices. Wi-Fi 6E systems like the Deco XE75 handle most plans well and cost less.
Can I use mesh with my Xfinity or Spectrum gateway?
Yes. Plug the main mesh unit into the gateway and turn on bridge mode so the two don't both run Wi-Fi. Or buy your own modem and skip the rented gateway.
