The best Wi-Fi extender for AT&T Fiber

Any extender works with a AT&T Fiber gateway. Here's when to use AT&T Fiber's own option, which Amazon models are worth buying, and when to switch to mesh.

The short answer

Ask AT&T Fiber about AT&T Smart Wi-Fi Extender first, since they join your network seamlessly. Otherwise, the TP-Link RE615X ($59.87) is the best extender for most AT&T Fiber homes, and the RE315 ($22.97) fixes one weak room cheaply. For a large home, a mesh kit like the Deco X55 covers more.

Option 1: AT&T Smart Wi-Fi Extender

AT&T offers a Smart Wi-Fi Extender that pairs with its gateway; on some faster plans it's included. Ask AT&T or check your account before buying one.

Option 2: an extender from Amazon

TP-Link RE615X (AX1800)
Best overall: Wi-Fi 6 with an Ethernet port

Up to 2,100 sq ft and 64 devices, with a gigabit port for wired use or access point mode.

TP-Link RE315 (AC1200)
Best cheap pick

Up to 1,600 sq ft. Fine for one weak room on plans up to about 300 Mbps.

TP-Link RE715X (AX3000)
Best for gig plans

Faster Wi-Fi 6, up to 2,400 sq ft, with an Ethernet port.

These work with any AT&T Fiber gateway. They may show up as a second network name; give it the same name and password in the setup app so devices switch on their own. For more picks, see the best Wi-Fi extenders.

Option 3: mesh for a bigger home

TP-Link Deco X55 (3-pack)
Wi-Fi 6 mesh, up to 6,500 sq ft

For a large or multi-story home: replaces the gateway's Wi-Fi with one network across the house.

AT&T's gateway can't be fully bridged, so put it in IP Passthrough mode and plug your mesh system into it.

Before you buy

Test speed next to the gateway, then in the weak room. If both are slow, an extender won't help; see why your internet is slow. If it's only the far rooms, move the gateway to a central spot first; that alone often fixes it.

How to set up an extender with AT&T Fiber

  1. Find the weak spots. Walk the house with your phone running a speed test; note where it drops below about a third of what you get next to the gateway.
  2. Plug the extender in halfway between the gateway and the weak area, where your phone still gets a good signal.
  3. Connect it with the WPS button on the extender and on the AT&T Fiber gateway, or through the TP-Link Tether app.
  4. Copy your network name and password so devices move between the gateway and extender automatically.
  5. Retest the weak room. If it's still slow, move the extender one room closer.

Common AT&T Fiber Wi-Fi problems an extender won't fix

  • Slow everywhere, even next to the gateway: that's the plan or the line, not Wi-Fi. Restart the gateway, check for outages, or consider a faster plan.
  • Drops at the same time every evening: likely network congestion; contact AT&T Fiber.
  • Old devices: a Wi-Fi 4 or 5 laptop won't get Wi-Fi 6 speeds from any extender.

Tips to get more from your AT&T Fiber Wi-Fi first

  • Move the gateway to the center of the home, up off the floor and out of cabinets.
  • Plug TVs and consoles near the gateway in by Ethernet.
  • Use the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band for close devices and 2.4 GHz for far ones.
  • Restart the gateway every few weeks and keep its firmware updated.
