What iPhone Handoff does

iPhone Handoff is a carrier feature in iOS 27 that lets one phone number work on two compatible iPhones, such as the foldable iPhone Duo and an iPhone 18 Pro. The number is active on one iPhone at a time, and you choose which one. It is not a second line with its own number.

Reporting on the feature says both iPhones need to be signed in to the same Apple Account, with Messages in iCloud turned on, so texts and calls stay in sync when you switch. Check your carrier's requirements before you buy a second iPhone for it.

Is it worth paying for?

It mainly helps people who carry two iPhones, such as a small phone for going out and a larger one for work, and don't want two numbers. If you only switch phones now and then, moving your eSIM between iPhones is free; our eSIM guide explains how. If you're choosing a carrier partly for this, the $5 difference adds up to $60 a year.

Not the same as Apple Handoff

Apple's older Handoff feature, which lets you start something on one Apple device and pick it up on another, is free and doesn't involve your carrier. iPhone Handoff is a separate, carrier-billed feature for your phone number.
