The short answer

Borrow or use a phone on the same carrier and run speed tests where the gateway would go, morning and evening. Check the carrier's coverage map for the strongest 5G tier at your address. Then sign up using the trial (T-Mobile offers a 15-day test drive) and keep your old service until it passes a week of real use.

The 5-step test

  1. Phone test. On a phone using T-Mobile, Verizon or AT&T, run a speed test at the window where the gateway would sit. Do it in the morning and around 8 p.m.
  2. Coverage map. On the carrier's map, look for its strongest 5G tier at your address (T-Mobile 5G Ultra Capacity, Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband). Weaker colors usually mean slower home internet.
  3. Availability check. Enter your address on the carrier's site; home internet is limited per tower, so "not available" can change later.
  4. Ask neighbors. Local Reddit and Facebook groups are full of real results by neighborhood.
  5. Trial it. Sign up, keep your current provider for a week or two, and use it for real: video calls, streaming at night, gaming if you play.

Green flags and red flags

Green flagsRed flags
Phone speed test over 100 Mbps at nightPhone speeds under 25 Mbps or big evening drops
Strongest 5G tier on the mapEdge of coverage or 4G only
Neighbors happy for monthsRecent complaints about "tower full" or slowdowns
Gateway signal strong at a windowSignal weak everywhere in the house

Trial periods

  • T-Mobile: 15-day test drive; return for a refund if it doesn't work.
  • Verizon and AT&T: check current return windows when you order.
  • Buy from the carrier directly or a corporate store, not a third-party reseller, so the return policy applies.

If the test fails, see how to get a better 5G signal or compare other 5G options.

Questions

How do I know if 5G home internet will work at my house?

Run speed tests on a phone using the same carrier where the gateway would go, morning and evening, and check the carrier's coverage map for its strongest 5G tier. Then use the trial period before canceling your current service.

Can I try T-Mobile Home Internet before committing?

Yes. T-Mobile offers a 15-day test drive with a refund if you return it.

Why does it say 5G home internet isn't available at my address?

Carriers limit home internet signups per tower to protect speeds. Availability can open up later, so check again in a few weeks.
