Alaska Communications
Alaska's other big wired provider: fiber up to 2.5 Gbps in parts of Anchorage, Soldotna and Fairbanks, with no data caps on any plan.

Our verdict
Alaska Communications (ACS) is GCI's main wired rival. Where its fiber reaches, in select neighborhoods of Anchorage, Soldotna and Fairbanks, it is the better deal: Fiber 250 is $79.99, Fiber 500 is $99.99, 1 Gig is $149.99 and 2.5 Gig is $174.99, all with unlimited data and matching upload speeds from 500 Mbps up.
The catch is the contract. Those prices include a $10 monthly discount that needs a 24-month agreement, autopay and paperless billing, and plans rise $10 after the promo term. GCI has no term commitment.
Outside the fiber areas, ACS sells fixed wireless (up to 300 Mbps from $79.99) and DSL (up to 75 Mbps from $84.99). DSL is its most widely offered service, and at that speed GCI's cable or Starlink is usually the better buy.

Frequently asked
How much does Alaska Communications fiber cost?
Fiber 250 (250/25 Mbps) is $79.99/mo, Fiber 500 is $99.99, Fiber 1000 is $149.99 and Fiber 2500 is $174.99, with autopay, paperless billing and a 24-month agreement. Plans starting at $79.99 rise to $89.99 after the promo term.
Does Alaska Communications have data caps?
No. Every plan, including DSL and fixed wireless, has unlimited data with no overage charges.
Where is Alaska Communications fiber available?
In select neighborhoods of Anchorage, Soldotna and Fairbanks. Elsewhere ACS offers fixed wireless or DSL. Check your address for what reaches you.
Is Alaska Communications better than GCI?
Where ACS fiber reaches, usually yes: it is cheaper at 250 Mbps and 2.5 Gig, has no data caps and uploads far faster. GCI wins on reach, on no-contract pricing and on its free mobile line with GCI+.
Is there a contract?
The advertised fiber prices need a 24-month agreement. The agreement is what unlocks the $10/mo discount; plans then revert to the regular price ($79.99 becomes $89.99, $89.99 becomes $99.99).
Is installation included?
Fiber 250 includes a free router and professional installation, and DSL plans include professional installation. FiberNow needs no installation. Ask about installation on other plans when you order.
Can I get the full 2.5 Gbps over WiFi?
Not usually. ACS says the 2.5 Gbps maximum is a wired speed through the 10G Ethernet port on its fiber gateway. WiFi speeds depend on your devices and router. See router speed for your plan.
Does Alaska Communications sell mobile service?
No. ACS sold its wireless business to GCI in 2015. For a phone plan, look at GCI, AT&T or a prepaid carrier.
Which Alaska Communications service will you get?
ACS sells four kinds of home internet, and your address decides which. Fiber (up to 2.5 Gbps, matching uploads from 500 Mbps up) is only in select neighborhoods of Anchorage, Soldotna and Fairbanks. FiberNow (up to 1 Gbps) is sold at select locations with no installation needed. FiWi is fixed wireless up to 300 Mbps. Everywhere else, the service is DSL at up to 75 Mbps, which ACS calls its most widely offered internet.
Every plan has unlimited data. Fiber, FiWi and FiberNow include WiFi equipment and the ACS SmartHome app (Calix); on DSL plans the equipment and app cost extra. If you are offered DSL, compare GCI cable and Starlink before you sign a two-year agreement.

Monthly price × 24, before taxes. ACS prices need the 24-month agreement; GCI has no contract but caps data on all but its top plan.
| Speed | Alaska Communications | GCI (standalone) |
|---|---|---|
| 250 Mbps | $1,919.76 (unlimited data) | $2,159.76 (250 GB/mo) |
| 500 Mbps | $2,399.76 (unlimited, 500 up) | $2,999.76 (800 GB/mo) |
| 1 Gig | $3,599.76 (unlimited) | $3,599.76 (1 TB/mo) |
| 2.5 Gig | $4,199.76 (unlimited) | $4,559.76 (unlimited) |
GCI narrows the gap if you also need a phone line: GCI+ bundles add unlimited data on 500 Mbps and up and a mobile line free for 12 months. See our GCI review and how data caps work.
