Astound Price for Life: is the extra $5 worth it?

Astound lets you pay $5 more a month to keep your price for as long as you keep your plan. Here's when that's a good trade.

The short answer

Price for Life costs $5 more ($45 instead of $40 for 1 Gig) but holds your rate for as long as you keep the same plan. The $40 promo rises after 12 months. If you expect to stay more than about a year, Price for Life almost always wins. It doesn't lock fees, equipment charges or taxes, and it ends if you change plans.

How it works

  • Two prices for 1 Gig: $40/mo for the first 12 months, or $45/mo with Price for Life.
  • What's locked: the monthly rate for your internet plan, for as long as you keep that same plan.
  • What's not locked: fees, equipment (WiFi is $10/mo below 2 Gig) and taxes can still change.
  • What ends it: changing to a different plan. Both prices also need AutoPay and e-bill from a bank account.

The math

In year one, Price for Life costs $60 more ($5 × 12). After that, the $40 plan rises to Astound's regular rate. Astound doesn't publish that number upfront, but if it climbs by more than $5, you make the $60 back within the second year, and every month after is savings. Cable promos in Boston typically rise by $20 or more after year one, which would recover the $60 in three months.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you're moving within a year, since you'd pay the extra $5 for nothing. Skip it too if you expect to change speeds soon, because switching plans ends the lock. And if you don't mind calling Astound every year to ask for a better rate, the cheaper $40 plan plus a yearly call can work just as well. Here's how to push back on a price increase.

Compare lock lengths across providers in price locks compared. Xfinity, for comparison, locks new plans for 5 years.

The bottom line

For most households, Price for Life is the better deal. You pay $60 more in the first year, and in return you never face the year-two price jump that catches most cable customers. If you plan to stay at your address and keep the same speed for two years or more, it almost certainly saves you money.

It isn't a promise that your whole bill stays the same. Fees, equipment and taxes can still go up, and the lock ends the moment you change plans. Pick the speed you'll be happy with for the long run, ideally 1 Gig, which also comes with unlimited data, and then leave it alone.
