Xfinity
The most widely available fast internet in the country, with unlimited data, the gateway included and a 5-year price guarantee on new plans.
Xfinity plans at a glance
Our verdict
Xfinity is the default fast option for millions of homes, and for good reason — it's widely available and its download speeds genuinely compete with fiber. New plans run $45/mo for 300 Mbps, $60 for 500 Mbps, $70 for 1 Gig and $100 for 1.2 Gig, each locked for five years with autopay, plus taxes and fees.
In J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Internet Service Provider Satisfaction Study (October 2026), Xfinity ranked second among wired providers in the North Central region (558), behind AT&T (578) and above the segment average of 553.
The trade-offs show up later. Uploads still trail fiber, and the guaranteed price needs autopay and paperless billing; without them you pay $10/mo more. Older plans keep the 1.2 TB cap, so existing customers should check which plan they are on.
If fiber isn't on your street, Xfinity is usually the best cable choice. If it is, fiber's symmetrical speeds and cap-free plans are worth chasing first.

Xfinity Shield: WiFi security and home monitoring
Xfinity launched Xfinity Shield on August 18, 2026. It has two tiers, both managed in the Xfinity app, and both need an Advanced Xfinity Gateway for every feature.
WiFi Shield is included with Xfinity Internet at no extra cost. It bundles CyberSecure network protection against malware and phishing, WiFi Motion (camera-free motion alerts from your WiFi signal) and Family Settings for screen time and device limits.
Shield Select is $15/mo. It adds an indoor camera, a door/window sensor, cloud video storage and 24/7 urgent response. It's self-monitoring: there's no professional alarm monitoring, so it's not a replacement for a full alarm system. See ISP home security add-ons compared.
Fiber alternatives to Xfinity
Where fiber reaches your address, it usually beats Xfinity on upload speed and often on price. Which fiber provider you can get depends on where you live:
- AT&T Fiber vs. Xfinity, in AT&T's 21 fiber states
- Verizon Fios vs. Xfinity, in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic
- Quantum Fiber (now AT&T Fiber) vs. Xfinity and CenturyLink vs. Xfinity, in former Lumen areas
- Ziply Fiber vs. Xfinity, in the Northwest
- Astound vs. Xfinity in Boston, if you want another cable option

Frequently asked
Does Xfinity have a data cap?
Not on current plans. New Xfinity plans include unlimited data and the WiFi gateway. The 1.2 TB cap now applies only to older plans, and switching to a current plan removes it.
Will my Xfinity price go up?
Not for five years on current plans. The 5-Year Price Guarantee locks the base internet rate for 60 months, even if you move within Xfinity's area. Taxes and fees can still change.
How fast is Xfinity internet?
Plans run from 300 Mbps up to 2 Gbps download, though upload speeds are much lower than fiber.
Can I use my own router with Xfinity?
Yes, but new plans already include the WiFi gateway at no extra cost. Your own modem mainly makes sense on an older plan that still charges $15/mo for the gateway. Using your own router with the gateway? See how to set up Xfinity bridge mode.
What is Xfinity Shield?
Xfinity's home protection platform, launched in August 2026. WiFi Shield (network security, WiFi motion alerts and parental controls) is included with Xfinity Internet on an Advanced Xfinity Gateway. Shield Select adds a camera, a door/window sensor, cloud video and 24/7 urgent response for $15/mo.
