Costs to budget for beyond the plan price

  • Static IP addresses. Usually a monthly add-on; needed for servers, VPNs and remote camera access. See does your business need a static IP or SLA?.
  • Equipment. Some providers include the router; Verizon Business Fios charges about $18/mo to rent one.
  • Installation. Often free online, but some tiers list $99–199, and new fiber builds can cost more.
  • Phone lines. Business VoIP lines add $20–40 per line at most providers; see business VoIP and business phone plans.
  • Contracts and price steps. One- and two-year agreements often step up after the first year, and leaving early can cost an early termination fee.
  • AutoPay requirements. Advertised prices usually assume AutoPay and paperless billing.
  • Taxes and fees. Business accounts often carry more surcharges than residential ones.
  • Backup internet. A 5G backup line typically adds $35–70/mo.

Why business internet costs more than home internet

On the same line, a business gig typically costs about twice a home gig: AT&T, for example, charges $140 for Business Fiber 1 Gig and $65 for its home 1 Gig. The premium buys business support, service commitments, static IP options and the right to run business services. See business vs. residential internet.

How to lower your business internet cost

  • Get at least two quotes. In areas with fiber competition, buyers often get 20–30% below the first quote.
  • Ask for the rate after the promo and get it in writing before signing a term agreement.
  • Bundle with business mobile lines if you need them anyway; several providers cut internet prices with a line.
  • Don't overbuy speed. Size the plan to your team, then add a cheap 5G backup instead of a bigger tier.
  • Ask about switching credits. Some providers cover early termination fees when you switch. See business internet referral programs.

Questions

Do business internet plans require a contract?

It depends on the provider. Spectrum Business and AT&T Business Fiber sell month to month; Comcast Business uses a 1-year agreement and Verizon Business Fios a 2-year agreement. Ask for the early termination fee in writing.

How much does a static IP cost?

Usually a monthly add-on that varies by provider and the number of addresses. Some business plans include one; ask for the price per address when you get a quote.

How much does dedicated business internet cost?

Dedicated internet access with a guaranteed speed and strict SLA typically costs several hundred to a few thousand dollars a month, depending on speed and location.

Is business internet tax deductible?

Internet used for a business is generally a deductible business expense, and a home office may be able to deduct the business share of a home plan. Check with a tax professional.
