The short answer

For existing business customers, Comcast Business pays the most: a bill credit equal to one month's charge or $100, whichever is greater, up to $10,000 a year. AT&T Business pays anyone with a tax ID one month's charge, up to $1,000 per referral and $25,000 a year, on a prepaid Visa card. Partner programs (Comcast's Authorized Connector, Spectrum Enterprise) pay up to $5,000 for larger deals.

How they work

Customer programs pay you as a bill credit once the business you referred installs service and stays a set period (30 days at Comcast). Partner programs pay cash or a prepaid card and are aimed at people who recommend technology for a living. AT&T's program is open to anyone with a Social Security number or EIN, not just customers.

Fine print to check

  • Contract requirements. Comcast's customer program has required the referred business to sign at least a one-year agreement.
  • New customers only. Referrals usually can't have been a customer recently (120 days at Comcast).
  • Taxes. Cash and card rewards are income; AT&T requires a W-9.
  • Timing. Expect 30–90 days after installation before you are paid.

Residential programs

Home internet programs are smaller: Spectrum gives both you and the person you refer a $50 credit (up to 20 referrals a year), and AT&T has offered $25 to the referrer and $75 to new Fiber or wireless customers. Questions

Does Comcast Business have a referral program?

Yes. Existing customers get a bill credit equal to one month's recurring charge or $100, whichever is greater, up to $10,000 a year. Partners can earn up to $1,500 per single-site referral and $5,000 for multi-site.

Do I need to be an AT&T customer to refer a business?

No. Anyone with a Social Security number or EIN can join AT&T Refer a Business, but you must submit a W-9 to be paid.

Are referral rewards taxable?

Cash and prepaid-card rewards are generally income, which is why programs like AT&T's require a W-9. Ask your accountant about bill credits.

How long do referral payments take?

Usually 30 to 90 days after the referred business installs service and stays active for the required period.
