The short answer

If you can get Fios, choose Fios. It's fiber with uploads that nearly match downloads, steadier speeds, and the cheapest Verizon plan at $30 for 300 Mbps. Verizon 5G Home ($50, or $35 with a Verizon phone plan) makes sense for renters, quick self-setup, a backup line, or Verizon mobile customers with a strong signal who want about 500 Mbps for $45.

Speed and reliability

Fios wins clearly. It's fiber, so speeds don't change with the time of day or the weather, and uploads nearly match downloads: 1 Gig delivers up to 940 Mbps down and 880 Mbps up. In J.D. Power's 2026 study, Verizon ranked highest in customer satisfaction among wired providers in the East.

5G Home speeds depend on your signal and how busy the local tower is. Where Verizon's C-band 5G is strong, it can be fast; elsewhere, evening speeds can sag. Uploads top out at 20–75 Mbps depending on the plan. Latency is higher and less steady than fiber, which matters for gaming and video calls.

Price

Fios is often the cheaper choice. Fios 300 Mbps is $30 a month, less than 5G Home's $35 even with a Verizon phone plan. 5G Home only comes out ahead on price at the 500 Mbps level for Verizon mobile customers: 5G Home Plus is $45 with a phone plan against $65 for Fios 500.

When 5G Home is the better pick

  • You're renting short-term or moving soon. No installation appointment, and you can take the router with you to a new address if 5G Home is available there.
  • You can't wait for an install. 5G Home ships a router you plug in yourself.
  • You want a second connection. As a backup for a home office, a wireless line doesn't share the fiber's failure points. See backup internet options.
  • Strong signal, Verizon phone, mid-tier speed. 5G Home Plus at $45 beats Fios 500 at $65 if your signal is reliably strong.

When Fios is the better pick

  • You work from home, upload large files, game or have several people streaming.
  • You want the lowest price: Fios 300 at $30.
  • You want 1 Gig or faster with steady speeds.
  • You want a 5-year price guarantee (1 Gig and up).

Can you switch between them?

Yes. Both are Verizon Home Internet, so you can move from one to the other on the same account where both are offered. Check whether a switch restarts your price guarantee, and return the old equipment. Both work with Verizon's Verizon One bundle and the Mobile + Home discount; see our Verizon One review.

Verdict

If Fios reaches your address, choose Fios. It's faster, steadier and, at 300 Mbps, cheaper. Pick 5G Home if you need flexibility, want a backup, or have a strong signal and a Verizon phone plan and want 500 Mbps-class speed for less.
