New Fire TV Stick 4K (2026) review: faster, with catches
What Amazon changed on its main 4K stick, what it removed, and when the 4K Max is the better buy.
The 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K is faster and has a better remote, and at its frequent $29.99 sale price it is a good second-TV stick. But it drops Dolby Vision and Dolby audio decoding, and its new Vega OS blocks sideloading. If any of that matters, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max is the better buy. Compare all your options in the best streaming device.

Vega OS: what changes
Vega OS is Amazon's own Linux-based system. Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, Prime Video, HBO Max and Peacock are available, and Amazon says more than 2,000 apps were added in the past year. You can no longer install Android apps from outside the Appstore. If you rely on a sideloaded app, buy the 4K Max instead.
Budget for the missing parts if your TV's USB port can't power the stick. Amazon sells the power adapter for $19.99, a longer cable for $9.99 and an HDMI extender for $5.99.
Who should buy it
- Buy it at $30 for a second TV, or if you only use mainstream streaming apps.
- Skip it if your TV supports Dolby Vision, you use a sideloaded app, or you want the most capable Fire TV; get the 4K Max.

Wi-Fi tips for streaming sticks
- Use the HDMI extender in the box so the stick isn’t hidden behind the TV’s metal back.
- Connect to the 5 GHz band if your router shows two networks.
- If 4K buffers, run a speed test on the TV itself: 4K needs about 25 Mbps steady.
- Still buffering? Add a mesh unit near the TV or use an Ethernet adapter.
