The short answer

Buy a Roku Ultra if you want one streamer that works for everyone. Otherwise, match it to the phone and smart home you already use: Apple TV 4K for iPhones, Fire TV Stick 4K for Alexa, Google TV Streamer for Google and Nest. On a tight budget, a Roku Streaming Stick or the Onn 4K Pro covers the basics.

The picks

Best overall

Roku Ultra

4K, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ · Wi-Fi 6 · Ethernet port · rechargeable Voice Remote Pro

Digital Trends' top pick for most people. Fast, works with every major app, and doesn't tie you to Apple, Amazon or Google. The home screen does show ads.

Best value stick

Roku Streaming Stick (2025) or Stick Plus

Plugs straight into the TV · Roku's simple menus

Tom's Guide's top pick is the Stick Plus. Roku raised prices on several streamers by up to 60% in July 2026, so compare against Fire TV and Onn before you buy. Replacing cable? See the best live TV streaming services. Both sticks hide behind the TV and are the easiest to hand to a parent.

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (2026)
Best for Alexa homes

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (2026)

4K · new findable remote · Vega 2.0 software

Amazon's new stick, launched this fall at $59, which Amazon calls its fastest 4K stick. Its new remote can be found with Alexa. The older Fire TV Stick 4K Max is often cheaper on sale. The home screen leans hard on Amazon's own shows.

Apple TV 4K
Best for iPhone households

Apple TV 4K

4K, Dolby Vision · AirPlay · Apple Home hub · new 4th-gen model adds Wi-Fi 7

The cleanest, fastest interface with no home-screen ads. Apple released a 4th-generation model this month at $299, adding Wi-Fi 7, hands-free Siri and surround sound upgrades; reviewers at What Hi-Fi? and TechRadar say the 3rd-generation model, while it's still sold, is the better value.

Google TV Streamer

4K, Dolby Vision · Ethernet port · Matter and Thread smart home hub

Replaced Chromecast. It sits next to the TV rather than behind it, and has a remote-finder button.

Onn 4K Pro (2026)

Walmart's Google TV box, which Digital Trends calls unusually capable for about $60.

Others worth a look

  • Nvidia Shield TV Pro: Consumer Reports' top-rated streaming device, for Plex, upscaling older video and USB storage. It is years old and has no successor announced.
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max: the previous top Fire TV stick, with Wi-Fi 6E, now often the cheaper buy on sale.
  • A game console: a PS5 or Xbox Series X already runs every major streaming app in 4K, so you may not need a separate box for that TV.

Roku vs. Fire TV vs. Apple TV vs. Google TV

  • Roku: the most neutral and simplest, with every major app. Home-screen ads.
  • Fire TV: fast and cheap on sale, built around Alexa and Prime Video.
  • Apple TV: the cleanest and fastest, with AirPlay and Apple Home. Costs the most.
  • Google TV: strong recommendations across apps, casting from Android phones, and Google Home control.

All four carry Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Max, Prime Video, YouTube, Peacock and Paramount+.

What your internet needs

4K streaming needs roughly 25 Mbps per stream, so most plans are fast enough; the weak point is usually Wi-Fi at the TV. If the picture drops to low quality, plug in an Ethernet cable (Roku Ultra, Apple TV 4K 128GB and Google TV Streamer have a port) or add a mesh unit near the TV. See what internet speed you need and the best internet for streaming. On a plan with a data cap, 4K uses several gigabytes an hour; our data caps guide explains the limits.

Cutting cable?

A streamer plus a live TV service replaces cable for most households. Our guide to watching NFL games without cable compares the services, and here's how to cancel DIRECTV if you're dropping satellite.

Questions

Is the Google TV Streamer worth it over a Chromecast?

Google stopped selling the Chromecast with Google TV in 2024, so the Streamer is its replacement. It adds an Ethernet port, more storage and a built-in Matter and Thread hub. If you only need apps on one TV, a cheaper Onn or Fire TV stick does the same job.

What is the best streaming device?

The Roku Ultra for most people, because it is fast and works with every major app without tying you to one company. Pick Apple TV 4K if your household uses iPhones, Fire TV Stick 4K for Alexa homes, or Google TV Streamer for Google and Nest homes.

Roku vs. Fire TV: which is better?

Roku has simpler menus and doesn't favor one store's shows. Fire TV is faster at a similar price and works with Alexa, but its home screen pushes Amazon content.

What internet speed do I need for 4K streaming?

About 25 Mbps per 4K stream is a safe rule, so a 100 Mbps plan covers a few 4K TVs at once. Wi-Fi strength at the TV matters as much as the plan speed.

Do I need a streaming device if I have a smart TV?

Not always. A streamer helps when the TV's built-in apps are slow, missing or no longer updated, which is common on TVs more than a few years old.
