The short answer

HostGator's shared hosting starts at $3.75/mo for Hatchling, $4.50 for Baby and $6.25 for Business, all on a 3-year term paid up front. At renewal they rise to $10.99, $16.49 and $21.99 on another 3-year term, and more on shorter terms. Budget for a .com renewal ($22.99 a year) and paid domain privacy too. Our HostGator review covers whether it's worth it.

Other HostGator plans

  • WordPress hosting: managed plans for WordPress with automatic updates, starting higher than shared hosting (about $7.95/mo for the starter tier, renewing around $12.95, as reported earlier this year).
  • VPS and dedicated servers: for sites that need their own resources. These cost several times more than shared hosting.
  • Website builder: a drag-and-drop option for people who don't want WordPress.

If you cancel in the first year, HostGator deducts $17.99 from your refund for the free domain. One way to cut the domain costs is to register it at Namecheap, which includes privacy free, and point it at HostGator.

How to pay less

  1. Pick the 3-year term if you're sure about the site. It has the lowest intro price and the lowest renewal rate.
  2. Untick add-ons at checkout. You can add backups or security later.
  3. Renew on a 3-year term again rather than letting it roll to 1 year or monthly.
  4. A month before renewal, compare: Bluehost renews at $9.99 and Namecheap at $55.88 a year.
