HostGator vs Hostinger: which costs less over time?

Both sell cheap shared hosting with steep renewals. The difference is how long you prepay and what's included.

The short answer

Hostinger is cheaper up front if you prepay 4 years ($2.99/mo on Premium), and both entry plans renew at about $10.99/mo. HostGator gives you 10 sites and cPanel on its entry plan against Hostinger's 3, and a shorter commitment. Hostinger includes more (weekly backups, a cheaper domain renewal). For most single-site owners, Hostinger is the better value; for several small sites on cPanel, HostGator still makes sense.

Cost over the long run

Over four years, Hostinger Premium costs about $144 (all at the intro rate) against roughly $135 for three years of HostGator plus a year at the 1-year renewal ($158), about $293. Over six years the gap narrows because both renew near $10.99, but Hostinger's cheaper domain renewal and included backups still save you money each year.

Performance and support

Published speed tests and reviewers tend to rate Hostinger faster on shared plans, and CNET rated HostGator 7/10, "only acceptable for casual users". HostGator's strengths are cPanel, more sites per plan, and phone support. Hostinger supports customers by chat and email only.

  • Shorter 3-year commitment for the best price
