How reliable is Mediacom internet? What the data says
Mediacom's own reliability figures and its customers' ratings tell two different stories. Both are worth knowing before you sign up.
Mediacom says its network delivers 99.99% reliability, citing its own 2026 report. Customers are less positive: Xtream (Mediacom) scored 64 out of 100 in the 2026 American Customer Satisfaction Index, up from 63 but below the 71 average for non-fiber internet providers.
What does Mediacom claim?
Mediacom advertises "99.99% network reliability", citing its 2026 Executive Summary Reliability Report. That is the company's own measurement of network uptime, not an independent test, and it describes the network as a whole rather than any single home.
99.99% uptime allows about 53 minutes of downtime a year. A neighbourhood outage that lasts a day, which customers do report, is outside that figure for the people affected even if the network-wide average holds.
What do customers say?
The ACSI score covers the whole experience, including price and customer service, not just uptime. Common complaints in reviews are outages with little communication and slow support; speeds draw fewer complaints.
What protections do you get?
- 90-day money-back guarantee. Mediacom backs its internet plans with one, which gives you a full billing cycle or two to judge reliability at your address.
- No contract. All plans are commitment-free.
- Outage credits. Ask for a credit after a multi-hour outage; keep a note of the dates.
How do you handle Mediacom outages?
First check whether it is your equipment or the network, using our 2-minute outage check. If you work from home, a backup line removes most of the risk: a 5G home plan or a phone hotspot can carry you through. Our best backup internet guide compares the options, starting around $20 a month.
What are the alternatives in Mediacom areas?
In Iowa, where Mediacom reaches 77% of homes, CenturyLink and T-Mobile 5G Home also report service in many of the same towns. In Missouri, Brightspeed and AT&T do. See AT&T Fiber vs. Mediacom for a head-to-head, or compare 5G home internet.
How fast is Mediacom?
Speed complaints are less common than outage complaints. Current plans:
How can you make Mediacom more reliable at home?
- Use the included eero WiFi and place it centrally, off the floor.
- Wire the devices that matter with Ethernet; see Ethernet vs. WiFi.
- Check the coax. Loose connectors and splitters cause many drops; ask for a line test if they recur.
- Keep a log of outage times. It helps a technician find the fault and supports a credit request.
Is Mediacom better than the alternatives?
Mediacom's strengths are no data caps, long price locks and WiFi included. Its weak spot is customer satisfaction. Where fiber is available at your address, it is usually the more reliable choice; where it is not, Mediacom competes mostly with DSL and 5G home internet.
