In brief

Sign in to the Cox app or your account at cox.com: a confirmed outage shows as a red alert, sometimes with a repair time.

There's an outage

Wait it out, then ask Cox for a credit.

Nothing there

Restart the modem and test with a cable.

Cox is now Spectrum. Charter, the company behind Spectrum, bought Cox on Aug 20, 2026, and Cox moved to the Spectrum brand on Sept 16. Existing Cox customers keep their plans, equipment and account tools for now. What changes for Cox customers

How to check if Cox is down

  1. Open the Cox app. Signed in, a confirmed outage in your area shows as a red alert, sometimes with an estimated repair time.
  2. Sign in at cox.com. The same alert appears in your account.
  3. Turn on outage texts. Add your mobile number in the app or online, and Cox texts you when service is back.
  4. Look at the modem. A blinking or off online light, with a cable-connected computer also offline, points to Cox's network.

Cox has no public outage map and no way to report an outage online. User-report sites like Downdetector can show whether neighbors are seeing the same problem.

If there's no outage

Unplug the modem and router for a minute, then plug in the modem first. Check that the coax cable is finger-tight. Try a computer plugged into the modem with a cable: if it works, the problem is your router or Wi-Fi. Our guide to telling your internet from the service walks through it, and a Cox speed test shows whether you're getting your plan's speed.

How to get a Cox outage credit

Ask for it. Customers report that Cox doesn't add outage credits on its own. Once service is back, note when it went down and came back, then contact Cox by chat in the app or by phone at 1-800-234-3993.

Getting online during an outage

Your phone's hotspot is the quickest fix. If outages keep costing you work, see the best backup internet for home. If they keep happening, compare what else reaches your address and read our guide to canceling Cox.

Not yet for existing customers. Cox moved to the Spectrum brand on Sept 16, 2026, but existing Cox customers keep their plans, equipment and account tools for now.
