Is Spectrum down? How to check for an outage, and get a credit
Spectrum shows outages in the My Spectrum app and on spectrum.net when you're signed in. Here's how to tell an outage from a problem at home, and how to ask for a credit, which Spectrum doesn't apply on its own.
Open the My Spectrum app and sign in: outages appear on the home screen with an estimated fix time.
After a long outage, contact Spectrum and ask for a credit.
Restart the modem and test with a cable.
Before anything else, run a quick speed test. If it fails or shows almost nothing, the problem is the connection, not the app.
How to check if Spectrum is down
- Open My Spectrum. Signed in, the app shows any outage at your address on the home screen. Tap it for details and an estimated restoration time.
- Sign in at spectrum.net. Outage alerts appear at the top of the support page, with the affected services.
- Check your texts. Spectrum sends outage texts to the account holder's phone, if alerts are turned on in your account settings.
- Look at the modem. A blinking or red online light, with a cable-connected computer also offline, points to Spectrum's network.
If there's no outage
Unplug the modem and router for a minute, then plug in the modem first. Check that the coax cable is finger-tight. Try a computer plugged into the modem with a cable: if it works, the problem is your router or Wi-Fi. Our guide to telling your internet from the service walks through it, and why your internet is slow covers the usual causes.
How to get a Spectrum outage credit
Spectrum doesn't add outage credits automatically. Its terms say Spectrum "may give credit" for qualifying outages, but it isn't required to. Wait until service is back, note when it went down and came back, then ask for a credit through chat in the My Spectrum app or by phone. Credits usually appear on the next bill or the one after.
Getting online during an outage
Spectrum Internet customers can use Spectrum WiFi hotspots, which may still work nearby if the outage is local. Your phone's hotspot is the other quick fix, and Spectrum Mobile customers can use their phone's data. If outages keep costing you work, see the best backup internet for home. If they keep happening, read our Spectrum review and compare what else reaches your address.
