Is Xfinity fiber or cable? DOCSIS 4.0 explained (2026)
Xfinity advertises "fiber-powered" internet, but most homes connect over coaxial cable. Here's what that means and when it matters.
Mostly cable. Xfinity runs a hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) network: fiber carries the signal to your neighborhood, and a coaxial cable connects your home. Downloads reach 2 Gbps, but uploads top out at 100 Mbps on most plans (250 Mbps on 2 Gig). DOCSIS 4.0 upgrades in select areas raise upload speeds. Fiber to the home still gives equal upload and download.
Is Xfinity fiber?
Not for most homes. Like other cable companies, Xfinity uses fiber in the core of its network and coaxial cable for the last stretch to your home. That design is called hybrid fiber-coax, or HFC. Xfinity does sell fiber to the home at some addresses, mainly for its fastest multi-gig service, but its standard plans run over cable.
Cable vs. fiber at a glance
What is DOCSIS 4.0?
DOCSIS is the standard cable networks use to carry internet over coaxial cable. DOCSIS 3.1 is what most cable homes use today. DOCSIS 4.0, published by the cable industry's research group CableLabs, raises the theoretical maximum to about 10 Gbps download and 6 Gbps upload over the same coax. Comcast has started rolling it out in select markets, which is how cable can begin to offer much faster uploads.
Does it matter for you?
- Streaming and browsing: Xfinity cable is plenty; download speed is what counts.
- Video calls, cloud backups, uploading video: fiber's equal uploads make a real difference. On Xfinity, 2 Gig's 250 Mbps upload helps.
- Gaming: both work well; fiber is usually steadier at peak times.
- Price: Xfinity's 5-year guarantee plans start at $45 for 300 Mbps. See Xfinity deals and plans.
If you can get fiber too
Compare the same speed tier: AT&T Fiber 300 is $50 with 300 Mbps upload, against Xfinity 300 at $45 with up to 100 Mbps upload. See fiber vs. Xfinity, Fios vs. Xfinity and our Xfinity review.
Why upload speeds differ by street: Comcast upload speeds by area.
Questions
Is Xfinity cable or fiber?
Mostly cable. Xfinity uses a hybrid fiber-coax network, so most homes connect by coaxial cable. It offers fiber to the home at some addresses.
Is cable internet as fast as fiber?
For downloads, cable can come close: Xfinity reaches 2 Gbps. Uploads are much slower on cable, and fiber holds up better at busy times.
What is DOCSIS 4.0?
The newest cable internet standard. It raises the theoretical maximum to about 10 Gbps download and 6 Gbps upload over coaxial cable. Comcast is rolling it out in select markets.
Does Xfinity have fiber in my area?
Possibly. Xfinity sells fiber to the home at some addresses, mainly for its fastest plans. Check your address on Xfinity's site.
