The short answer

Yes. Sign in on the Xfinity Email website at least once in the 90 days before you cancel, for every comcast.net address you want to keep. After that, sign in at least once every nine months. You'll keep your messages, address book and settings, but you can't add new addresses.

You can still change an existing address or deactivate it after you leave.

Before you cancel: four steps

  1. Sign in on the Xfinity Email website with every comcast.net address you want to keep. An email app on your phone may not count.
  2. Export your contacts from the address book.
  3. Save important messages such as receipts, tax records and account confirmations.
  4. Then cancel, using our guide to canceling Xfinity.

After you cancel: keep it alive

  • Set a calendar reminder to sign in on the Xfinity Email website every six months, well inside the nine-month limit.
  • Keep your password and security questions up to date; account recovery can be harder without an active Xfinity account.
  • Former customers report occasional unexpected deactivations, so don't rely on the address for anything critical.

The move to Yahoo Mail

Comcast is moving comcast.net email to Yahoo Mail, and Xfinity says it will notify you when it's time to make the switch. Until you get that notice, keep following the sign-in rules above.

Should you move to a new email instead?

For most people, yes, at least for important accounts. Keeping a comcast.net address ties your email to a provider you've left, and the sign-in rule is easy to forget. A free Gmail or Outlook address isn't tied to any internet provider.

  1. Create the new address.
  2. Add it as the recovery email for your phone, bank and main accounts.
  3. Update your email with banks, utilities, insurance, doctors and government services.
  4. Tell friends and family, and add an auto-reply to the Comcast address if you can.
  5. Keep the comcast.net address alive for a year while mail tapers off.
