What router speed do you actually need?

AX5400, BE9300, tri-band — the numbers on the box are marketing arithmetic. Here's the one spec that matters and how to size it to your plan.

The short answer

Ignore the big number on the box — it's every band added together and no single device ever sees it. What matters is that the router's WAN port meets or beats your plan speed: gigabit port for plans up to 1 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps port for anything faster. Beyond that, spend on coverage rather than speed ratings.

Why the box number is meaningless

A rating like AX5400 is the theoretical maximum of every band summed together, under lab conditions, with no walls and no other traffic. Your laptop connects to one band at a time, so it can never see that figure. Two routers with identical ratings can perform very differently at range, which is where you actually use them.

The useful specs are less exciting: the WAN port speed, the Wi-Fi generation, and how many nodes or antennas cover your floor area.

Size the WAN port to your plan

Up to 1 Gbps
Gigabit WAN port
Covers the overwhelming majority of plans sold today. Almost every router made in the last five years qualifies.
1.2 to 2 Gbps
2.5 Gbps WAN port
A gigabit port hard-caps you here, so you'd pay for a multi-gig plan and receive a gigabit of it.
Above 2 Gbps
2.5 or 5 Gbps WAN plus Wi-Fi 7
At this tier, wired devices see the benefit first. Expect to run Ethernet to anything that genuinely needs the speed.

Most homes need less than they think

Streaming 4K takes about 25 Mbps per stream. A video call is under 5. Cloud backups and game downloads are the only common tasks that will use everything you've got, and they're happy to run in the background. A 300 to 500 Mbps plan comfortably serves a busy household, which means the router requirement is modest and the money is better spent on covering the whole house.

The specs worth paying for

  • WAN port speed that meets your plan — the single most common bottleneck.
  • Wi-Fi 6 as a baseline, 6E if you're in a dense building, 7 only with a multi-gig plan.
  • Enough LAN ports for wired devices and mesh backhaul.
  • Coverage matched to your floor area — nodes beat raw power in any house with walls.
  • An app without a subscription paywall for basic guest networks and parental controls.

Where speed goes missing

When people don't get their plan speed, the router's rating is rarely the culprit. Test wired from the modem first: if that's slow, the problem is upstream and no router helps. If wired is fast and Wi-Fi is slow, it's distance, walls, an old client device, or a 2.4 GHz connection where 5 GHz was available. And if you're renting a combined gateway, that hardware may simply be older than your plan.
