Tesla Premium Connectivity: is it worth $9.99 a month?
Every Tesla gets Standard Connectivity at no charge. Premium adds live traffic, streaming and camera view. Here's what you get, and when your phone's hotspot is enough.
Tesla Premium Connectivity costs $9.99/mo or $99/yr. It's worth it if you use live traffic, satellite maps or Sentry camera view from the app. If you mainly want music and video, your phone's hotspot (with Remain Connected in Drive on) does that for free.
Standard vs. Premium
| Feature | Standard (included) | Premium ($9.99/mo) |
|---|---|---|
| Maps and navigation | Yes | Yes, plus live traffic and satellite view |
| Software updates | Yes (over Wi-Fi) | Yes |
| Tesla app basics (lock, climate, charging) | Yes | Yes |
| Live camera view (Sentry) in the app | No | Yes |
| Video and music streaming over cellular | No | Yes |
| Internet browser over cellular | No | Yes |
| Caraoke | No | Yes |
| Over Wi-Fi or a hotspot | Streaming and browser work | All features |
The free alternative: your phone's hotspot
Every Tesla can join Wi-Fi, including your phone's hotspot. That gets you streaming, music and the browser without Premium:
- Turn on your phone's personal hotspot.
- On the car's screen, tap the Wi-Fi icon and choose your hotspot.
- Turn on Remain Connected in Drive so it stays connected while you drive.
What it doesn't replace: owners report that live traffic and satellite-view maps still need Premium, and remote camera view works only over the car's own cellular connection. Streaming video also uses phone data fast: about 1 to 3 GB an hour.
Is Premium worth it?
- Worth it: you rely on live traffic, use Sentry camera view from the app, or have passengers who stream on road trips. $99 a year is cheaper than paying monthly.
- Skip it: you mainly drive locally, use your phone for music, or already have a large hotspot allowance.
- Middle ground: subscribe monthly before a long trip, then cancel.
If you use a hotspot, check your phone plan
Hotspot data on many plans is limited or slowed after a set amount. If you'll stream in the car, pick a plan with enough hotspot data. Prepaid plans like Mint Mobile and Visible run on major networks for less. See our phone plan deals.
