In brief

The Starlink Mini kit starts at $149, and you pair it with a Roam plan: $55/mo for 100GB, $80 for 300GB, or $175 for unlimited high-speed data with international use. It suits RVs, camping, boats and backup. For a home, the Standard kit on a Residential plan usually gives more for the money.

Who it's for

  • RVers and van-lifers: in-motion use is supported on Roam plans in select areas.
  • Campers and hikers: sets up in minutes; pause with Standby Mode between trips.
  • Boaters: any Roam plan works in coastal and inland waters.
  • Backup internet: a Mini on Roam 100GB is a portable backup; see the best backup internet.
  • Not ideal for a full-time home: Residential plans ($55 for 100 Mbps, unlimited) and the Standard kit suit fixed homes better. See is Starlink worth it.

Powering it on the road

At 25–40W, a Mini running 8 hours a day uses about 200–320 Wh. A mid-size portable power station or an RV house battery covers that. With Starlink's USB-C cable accessory, a 100W USB-C PD power bank can run it.

Roam vs. Residential

Residential plans are for a fixed address: $55 for 100 Mbps, $85 for 200 Mbps and $130 for Max, all with unlimited data. Roam is for travel and multiple locations: $55 for 100GB, $80 for 300GB or $175 unlimited. If the dish mostly stays at one home, Residential gives more data for the money.

Setup tips

  • Use the Starlink app's obstruction check before you settle on a spot.
  • Point the Mini as the app directs; it uses software-assisted manual orienting.
  • In an RV, mount it where the roof is clear of air conditioners and ladders.
  • Turn on Standby Mode between trips instead of cancelling.
