Verizon Fios speed test: check your speed and fix it
Fios is fiber, so upload should be close to download. Here's how to test it properly, what your results should look like, and what to do if they don't.
Test on a computer wired to the Fios router, three times, and compare with your plan. Use our speed test and Verizon's. On Fios, upload should be close to download on every plan; if wired results are close to your plan but Wi-Fi is slow, the fix is Wi-Fi.
Fios plans and typical speeds
From Verizon plan details and Broadband Facts labels as published by Allconnect and InternetProviders.ai, Aug–Oct 2026. A 5 Gig tier is sold in some areas. Latency on the 300 Mbps label is about 7 ms.
So a wired 1 Gig test of 800 down and 800 up is a good result, not a shortfall. If your upload is far below your download on any Fios plan, something is wrong; fiber should be close to even.
What Fios results should look like
Fios plans are symmetrical or close to it: a 300 Mbps plan should test near 300 down and 300 up when wired. On 1 Gig, Verizon lists wired speeds up to 940 down and 880 up, with averages of 750 to 940 down.
How to run an accurate Fios test
- Plug a computer into the router with a Cat5e or Cat6 cable.
- Check the computer's port. A USB Ethernet adapter or an older laptop may cap you at 100 Mbps or 1 Gig.
- On a 2 Gig plan, one device on a 1 Gig port can't show the full speed. You need a multi-gig port to see it.
- Test three times and compare upload as well as download.
The router and the box on the wall
Fios comes into your home at a small box called the ONT, often in a garage, basement or closet, and runs to the router over Ethernet or coax. If speeds drop, restart the router first. If that doesn't help, check the cable between the ONT and the router.
Wi-Fi is usually the bottleneck
Fiber speeds often outrun Wi-Fi. Test next to the router, then in the rooms you use most. If speed falls off away from the router, add a mesh system or test room by room to find the weak spots.
If your speeds are low
Use the My Fios app to restart and troubleshoot, and check whether Verizon is down. If wired tests stay well below your plan, contact Verizon with your results. See our Verizon Fios review for plans.
Questions
What speed should I get on Fios 1 Gig?
Wired, usually in the high hundreds of Mbps both ways. Wi-Fi results are lower.
Why is my Fios upload as fast as download?
Fios is fiber, which carries upload and download at similar speeds. That's one of its main advantages over cable.
Why can't I get 2 Gig on a speed test?
Most devices have a 1 Gig port. You need a device with a multi-gig port, wired to the router, to see more than about 940 Mbps.
Should I restart the ONT?
Restart the router first. If that doesn't help, Verizon's troubleshooter in the My Fios app can guide you through the ONT.
