Why the best internet price needs bank AutoPay

The advertised price often assumes you pay automatically, and sometimes from a bank account rather than a card. Here's what that costs if you don't.

The short answer

Most advertised internet prices include an AutoPay discount, usually $5 to $10 a month. Several providers, including Frontier and Comcast Business, give the full discount only for bank-account AutoPay: paying by card costs $5 more, and not using AutoPay costs $10 more.

Why providers prefer bank payments

Card payments cost providers a processing fee on every bill, and cards expire or get replaced, which leads to failed payments. Bank transfers are cheaper and more reliable, so providers pass some of that saving on as a discount.

Setting it up safely

  • Use a checking account that always covers the bill, to avoid overdraft and late fees.
  • Turn on bill notifications so you see the amount a few days before it's taken.
  • Check the first two bills to confirm the discount is applied.
  • If a promo ends or the price changes, the amount taken changes too; review your bill when your promo ends.

If you prefer to pay by card

Compare the card price, not the advertised price. A $5/mo card surcharge adds $60 a year, which can change which provider is cheapest. See how to read your internet bill and the true cost of internet over 3 years.

Paperless billing is often part of the deal

Many discounts need both AutoPay and paperless billing. AT&T Fiber's advertised prices include a $10/mo discount for the two together. If you switch back to paper bills, the discount can disappear even if AutoPay stays on.

What to check when you sign up

  • Read the offer details for the words "AutoPay", "paperless" and "bank account".
  • Ask the representative for the price with card AutoPay and without AutoPay.
  • Look at the Broadband Facts label for discounts and their conditions: see Broadband Facts labels explained.
  • Check your first bill to confirm the discount is listed.

Questions

Why does my internet cost more without AutoPay?

Most advertised prices include an AutoPay discount, often $5 to $10 a month. Without AutoPay you pay the full price.

Does paying by credit card cost more?

At some providers, yes. Frontier and Comcast Business charge $5/mo more for card AutoPay than for bank AutoPay.

Can I lose my AutoPay discount?

Yes. If a payment fails, you switch to paper bills, or you change payment method, the discount can be removed. Check your bill after any change.
