Is AT&T down? How to check for an outage, and get a credit
AT&T shows outages in the Smart Home Manager app and on its outage page. Here's how to tell an outage from a problem at home, how to stay online on your AT&T phone, and how the AT&T Guarantee credit works.
Open the Smart Home Manager app or AT&T's outage page (att.com/outages) and sign in.
AT&T says it will tell you whether you qualify for a credit.
Restart the gateway and test with a cable.
Before anything else, run a quick speed test. If it fails or shows almost nothing, the problem is the connection, not the app.
How to check if AT&T is down
- Open Smart Home Manager. Signed in, the app shows outages affecting your home and runs a test on your connection.
- Check the outage page. Sign in at att.com/outages. Once AT&T has confirmed an outage, it shows an estimated restoration time.
- Look at the gateway. A red or flashing broadband light usually means the line is down, not your Wi-Fi.
- Check Downdetector. A sudden jump in reports suggests a wider outage, sometimes before AT&T's page shows it.
If there's no outage
Unplug the gateway for a minute and plug it back in. Then try a computer plugged into the gateway with a cable: if that works, the problem is Wi-Fi. Our guide to telling your internet from the service walks through it. Still down? Call AT&T internet support at 1-800-288-2020 so the problem is logged against your address.
How the AT&T Guarantee credit works
For AT&T Fiber and Internet Air customers using AT&T's gateway, AT&T says you may get a bill credit if a qualifying outage lasts more than 20 minutes. The credit is one day of service (your monthly rate divided by the days in the month), plus a day for each extra day if it lasts over 24 hours. It never exceeds your monthly internet price.
AT&T decides which outages qualify. Weather, natural disasters and power cuts at your home are excluded. AT&T says it tells eligible customers when it notifies them of the outage.
Stay online with Internet Backup
If you have AT&T Fiber and an AT&T phone line on a matching account, AT&T's Internet Backup lets your phone keep your home online during a fiber outage. You turn it on in Smart Home Manager, and the phone has to stay at home. For anyone else, a second connection on a different network is the fix: see the best backup internet for home. If outages keep happening, read our AT&T Fiber review and compare what else reaches your address.
If outages keep happening, AT&T customer service explains how to ask for a credit and escalate a complaint.
Pick a backup that isn't on AT&T's network, so one outage doesn't take out both.
