AT&T Fiber deals for new vs. existing customers

Most AT&T Fiber promotions are for new customers. Existing customers have fewer options, but the biggest one, the wireless bundle discount, is open to them.

In brief

New customers get the sign-up offers: a 12-month discount, a reward card on 1 Gig and faster, and AT&T covering cancellation fees from your old provider. Existing customers can't get those, but they can still get the wireless bundle discount ($15 to $25 a month off fiber) by adding an AT&T unlimited phone plan, and they can change speed tiers.

Deals for new customers

  • 12-month discount. AT&T runs a rotating discount off the monthly price for the first year. The current version takes $5/mo off 500 Mbps, $10 off 1 Gig and $15 off 5 Gig. It starts within three bills, and the regular rate applies after 12 months.
  • Reward card. Online orders of 1 Gig and faster have come with a $100 reward card. You have to redeem it after installation.
  • Switching costs. AT&T says it will cover cancellation fees from your old provider when you switch to AT&T Fiber.
  • Streaming extras. Short-term offers such as three months of YouTube TV come and go, usually with an end date in the fine print.

Deals existing customers can get

  • The wireless bundle discount. Customers with an eligible AT&T postpaid unlimited phone plan get a tiered discount off fiber: $15/mo on 300 or 500 Mbps, $20 on 1 Gig and $25 on 5 Gig. This is open to existing wireless customers, and to existing fiber customers who add an eligible unlimited plan. It applies before the AutoPay discount and starts within three bills.
  • Free cellular backup. AT&T unlimited wireless customers also get internet backup that switches to cellular if the fiber line drops.
  • Changing plans. You can move up or down a tier at the current price for that tier. Moving down is the fastest way to cut the bill if you don't use the speed.
  • Low-income plan. Access from AT&T is open to existing customers who qualify through SNAP, NSLP or income.

What existing customers usually can't get

The 12-month discount and reward card are for new accounts. AT&T's offer terms also exclude upgrades and migrations to fiber from several sign-up promotions, so moving from an older AT&T Internet plan to fiber doesn't count as a new customer. If you see a new-customer price that's lower than yours, call and ask whether a current plan or bundle can bring your bill closer to it; see how to negotiate.

Which saves more over three years?

Because AT&T's base prices aren't promotional, the gap between new and existing customers is smaller than with cable. On 1 Gig, the 12-month discount is worth $120 in the first year and nothing after. The wireless bundle discount is worth $240 a year for as long as you keep the phone plan, so it matters more over time if you'd use AT&T wireless anyway.

Phone plans without the AT&T wireless line

AT&T's fiber discount needs an AT&T wireless line. These prepaid phone plans work with any home internet provider.

Questions

Does AT&T give deals to existing customers?

Fewer than to new customers. Existing customers can get the wireless bundle discount ($15 to $25/mo off fiber) by having or adding an eligible AT&T unlimited phone plan, and can change plans at current prices. Sign-up discounts and reward cards are for new customers.

Does AT&T Fiber go up after 12 months?

The base plan price isn't a 12-month promotion. If you signed up with a 12-month discount, that discount ends and you pay the regular rate. AT&T can also change its standard rates.

Can I get the AT&T Fiber reward card as an existing customer?

Generally no. Reward cards are tied to new service orders, usually on 1 Gig and faster ordered online.

How do I lower my AT&T Fiber bill?

Make sure the AutoPay and paperless discount is on, check whether a lower tier is enough, and add the wireless bundle discount if you use or would switch to AT&T unlimited.
