The short answer

Yes, if nothing wired reaches you or you only have DSL: Starlink now starts at $55/mo with no contract. If cable, fiber or strong 5G reaches your address, those usually give more speed for less money and aren't deprioritized at busy times.

Residential 200 Mbps

Worth it if

  • You're rural and your only wired option is DSL, or nothing at all.
  • You want a backup on a separate network from your main line.
  • You move between homes, cabins or RV sites.
  • You work from home on Starlink and need standard priority: that's Residential Max at $130.

Not worth it if

Which plan to pick

Start on 100 Mbps if one or two people mostly stream and browse. Choose 200 Mbps for a family that streams at the same time. Pay for Max if you work from home, game, or need consistent speed in the evening, since it's the only plan that keeps standard priority. You can try any plan for 30 days with a full refund.

What Starlink is like day to day

Starlink connects to a network of low-orbit satellites, so the dish needs a clear view of the sky. Trees, chimneys and nearby buildings cause short dropouts; the Starlink app has an obstruction check that scans your sky before you install, and it's worth running from the exact spot you plan to mount the dish. Most households get speeds in the typical ranges Starlink lists for each plan, with the biggest dips in the evening on the 100 and 200 Mbps plans.

Heavy rain and snow can briefly slow the connection. The dish melts light snow on its own, but it uses more power to do it. Latency is low enough for video calls and most online games, though it varies more than on fiber or cable.

The costs beyond the monthly price

  • Hardware: a $0 rental kit in select areas; elsewhere you buy the kit.
  • Installation: self-install is free; professional installation is $99 on the 100 Mbps plan and free on 200 Mbps and Max.
  • Mounting: a roof or pole mount may cost extra if the included stand doesn't clear obstructions.
  • Demand surcharges: some busy areas add a one-time charge or a waitlist; Starlink shows this when you enter your address.
  • Taxes and shipping are added at checkout.

How to test it before you commit

  • Run the obstruction check in the Starlink app from where the dish will go.
  • Order the plan you think you need; you can change plans later.
  • Use the first 30 days to test evenings, video calls and streaming at the same time.
  • If it doesn't work for you, return it within 30 days for a full refund.

Questions

How much is Starlink a month now?

Starlink Residential starts at $55/mo for 100 Mbps. The 200 Mbps plan is $85 and Residential Max is $130.

Is Starlink worth it for rural areas?

Usually, yes. Where only DSL or older satellite reaches you, Starlink is far faster, and the 30-day refund lets you test it at your address.

Does Starlink have a contract?

No. There's no contract, and you get a full refund within 30 days.

Does Starlink work in bad weather?

Mostly. Heavy rain or snow can briefly slow it, and the dish melts light snow on its own. Obstructions such as trees cause more interruptions than weather does.
