Starlink Mobile explained: what SpaceX is building and when
SpaceX wants Starlink to become a full phone carrier. Two decisions this week moved that forward. Here is what exists today, what is planned, and what it means for your phone bill.
You cannot sign up for a Starlink Mobile phone plan yet. Today the service only reaches US phones through T-Mobile's T-Satellite add-on ($10/mo per line), which handles texting, 911 and a short list of apps. On Oct 6, 2026 the FCC approved 15,000 new satellites for a much faster network, and on Oct 8 SpaceX agreed to buy nationwide 800 MHz airwaves to cover indoors. SpaceX has not announced a price or a launch date for its own plans.
What is Starlink Mobile?
Starlink Mobile is SpaceX's name for its satellite-to-phone service, formerly called Direct to Cell. The satellites act like cell towers in orbit, so an ordinary smartphone can connect without a dish or a special antenna.
Until now it has worked only as an add-on to other carriers. In the US that is T-Mobile's T-Satellite. SpaceX now says it wants Starlink Mobile to become "a major mobile carrier in the US," competing with T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T directly.
What works today: T-Satellite
T-Satellite works on more than 60 phone models, and customers of other carriers can add it if their phone is unlocked and has an open eSIM slot. Supported apps include WhatsApp, Google Maps, AccuWeather and X, with limited functionality. It is meant for places with no cell signal, such as trails, back roads and remote cabins.
What changed this week
Oct 6: FCC approval for 15,000 satellites. The FCC cleared SpaceX to launch a new constellation of 15,000 satellites built for phones, flying in very low orbits between 326 and 335 km. SpaceX must have half of them working by Oct 7, 2032, and has said launches should start late next year. The FCC also waived the rule that would have required SpaceX to lease spectrum from a ground-based carrier, which lets it offer service on its own.
Oct 8: 800 MHz spectrum deal. SpaceX agreed to buy all of Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz licenses, up to 14 MHz of paired low-band spectrum. The Wall Street Journal reported the price at about $8 billion. Grain bought the same licenses from T-Mobile, a deal it completed in August 2026. The sale still needs FCC approval.
Low-band spectrum travels farther and passes through walls and trees. SpaceX plans to pair it with ground base stations so phones keep a signal indoors, which satellites alone cannot do well. This was one of the main gaps between a satellite add-on and a full carrier.
Timeline
Should you wait for it?
No. Nothing here changes what you should buy this year. The new satellites have not launched, the 800 MHz deal has not closed, and SpaceX has not published plans or prices. Analysts expect a Starlink internet and phone bundle eventually, but that is a forecast.
- If you want satellite texting now, T-Satellite is $10/mo and works with most recent phones on any carrier.
- If you want a cheaper phone bill now, prepaid carriers on the big networks start around $15–25/mo. Visible (partner link) is $25/mo on Verizon's network. See our Visible review.
- If you already have Starlink home internet and want a phone plan from one company, US Mobile's Starlink bundle is the closest thing available today.

What it means for home internet
Starlink Mobile is a phone service and does not replace a Starlink dish at home. The home service runs on a separate set of satellites. SpaceX began launching its larger V3 home-internet satellites on Starship in September 2026, which should add capacity for dish customers. Questions
Can I sign up for Starlink Mobile?
Not as a standalone phone plan. In the US, Starlink's phone service is sold as T-Mobile T-Satellite, a $10/mo add-on (included with Experience Beyond). SpaceX has not announced its own plans or prices.
How much will Starlink Mobile cost?
SpaceX has not said. Today's T-Satellite add-on is $10/mo per line.
Does T-Satellite work if I'm on Verizon or AT&T?
Yes, if your phone is a supported model, unlocked, and has an open eSIM slot. You add it through T-Mobile for $10/mo.
Will Starlink Mobile work indoors?
Satellite service needs a view of the sky. SpaceX plans to use the 800 MHz spectrum it is buying, with ground base stations, to cover indoors. That deal still needs FCC approval.
When will the new Starlink Mobile satellites launch?
SpaceX has said it plans to begin launches late in 2027. The FCC requires half of the 15,000 satellites to be working by October 2032.
