The verdict

Take AT&T Fiber if it reaches you: 300 Mbps is $50/mo, it's faster and steadier, and it has no data cap. Internet Air ($55/mo) is AT&T's 5G service for addresses fiber doesn't reach.

Which to choose

  • Fiber whenever it's available: for $5 less, 300 Mbps fiber beats Internet Air on speed and consistency.
  • Internet Air when fiber isn't built to your address, or as a quick setup you can move.
  • Compare Internet Air with other 5G options: the best 5G home internet.

How they differ day to day

AT&T Fiber runs a fiber line into your home, so speeds are the same up and down and stay steady in the evening. Internet Air uses AT&T's 5G and 4G network through a gateway you place near a window; speeds depend on signal strength and how busy the network is, and uploads are slower than downloads.

Setup

  • AT&T Fiber: professional installation at $0; a technician brings fiber into the home and sets up the gateway.
  • Internet Air: self-setup in minutes; place the gateway where the app shows the best signal.
  • Both include the AT&T Guarantee, which gives bill credits for qualifying outages.

When Internet Air makes sense

  • Fiber isn't built to your address yet.
  • You need internet quickly and can't wait for an install appointment.
  • You're renting short-term and want a gateway you can take with you.
  • You want to compare it against other 5G services: T-Mobile vs. Verizon 5G.

Questions

Is AT&T Internet Air as good as fiber?

No. Fiber is faster and more consistent. Internet Air is a good option where fiber isn't available.

How much is AT&T Internet Air?

$55/mo, and AT&T says the price won't go up after the first year. You don't need AT&T wireless.

Can I switch from AT&T Internet Air to AT&T Fiber?

Yes, when fiber reaches your address. Order fiber, and once it's installed, return the Internet Air gateway.
