The best USB-C hubs and docks of 2026

Hubs and docks that add ports, a monitor and, most usefully, a wired internet connection to a modern laptop.

The short answer

For a desk setup, the CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt dock adds 18 ports, including 2.5 Gbps Ethernet. For travel, get a small hub such as the Anker 341. Whatever you buy, pick one with an Ethernet port: plugging your laptop in makes video calls steadier than any Wi-Fi upgrade.

The picks

Best dock

CalDigit TS4

Thunderbolt 4 · 18 ports · 2.5GbE · 98W

One cable to the laptop gives you charging, two monitors on most laptops, plenty of USB ports, an SD reader and 2.5 Gbps Ethernet.

Worth knowing

Expensive, and it needs a Thunderbolt or USB4 port for full speed.

Best travel hub

Anker 341 USB-C Hub

7-in-1 · HDMI · 100W passthrough

Small and cheap, with HDMI, USB-A, USB-C, SD card slots and charging passthrough.

Why add Ethernet to a laptop

Most new laptops have no Ethernet port. A hub or adapter with one gives you a steadier connection for calls, uploads and large downloads, and it is the only way to get more than about 1 Gbps on many laptops.

Pro tip

If a hub's Ethernet seems slow, check the speed in your computer's network settings. A Cat 5 cable or a router port limited to 100 Mbps is a common cause.

  • 1 Gbps: plenty for most plans
  • 2.5 Gbps: for 2 Gig and faster fiber plans; needs a router with a 2.5 Gbps port
  • USB-C vs Thunderbolt: USB-C hubs share one connection; Thunderbolt docks carry more at once

After you plug in, check your Ethernet speed in Windows 11. A 2.5 GbE adapter also speeds up file copies to a home NAS.

1 GbE or 2.5 GbE?

A 1 GbE port tops out around 940 Mbps in practice, which covers plans up to 1 Gig. If your plan is faster than 1 Gig, or you copy large files to a NAS, get a 2.5 GbE adapter such as the Plugable 2.5Gb. It only helps if your router or switch also has a 2.5 Gbps port.

Hubs for MacBook, Windows laptops and iPad

  • MacBook: any USB-C hub works. For two external displays on base M-series chips, you need a DisplayLink dock.
  • Windows laptops: a Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 port runs docks like the CalDigit TS4 at full speed; a plain USB-C port limits display and data speed.
  • iPad: USB-C iPads work with most hubs, including Ethernet. Charging through the hub needs USB Power Delivery pass-through.

How we picked

We compared published lab tests, owner reports and maker specs, and ranked on:

  • Ports included, especially Ethernet
  • Display support
  • Charging passthrough
  • Price

More on our process is in how we research.

Others we considered

  • Anker Prime docks: Strong Thunderbolt alternatives to the TS4 at similar prices.
  • Apple USB-C Digital AV Adapter: HDMI and USB only, and costs more than third-party hubs.
  • Unbranded multiport hubs: Often fine, but quality varies and many overheat.

Questions

Can a USB-C hub charge my laptop?

Yes, if it supports USB Power Delivery pass-through. Plug your laptop charger into the hub’s PD port. The hub keeps some power for itself, so a 100 W charger delivers about 85 to 90 W to the laptop.

Do USB-C hubs need drivers for Ethernet?

Most do not. macOS, Windows 11 and iPadOS include drivers for the common Realtek chips. Some 2.5 GbE adapters need a one-time driver download on older Windows versions.

Is a hub or a dock better?

A hub is small and cheap for travel. A dock stays on the desk and drives monitors, charging and Ethernet from one cable.

Will a USB-C hub work with my phone or iPad?

Most do, for USB drives, HDMI and Ethernet.

Does Ethernet through a hub slow my internet?

No. A gigabit adapter runs at full speed on most plans.
