The short answer

For the lowest price, Visible+ at $35 a month includes talk, text and data in both countries with taxes included. T-Mobile Experience More (15GB of data there) and Verizon Unlimited Ultimate include the most. Many cheaper plans, including Mint, base Visible and Ultra Mobile, include calls to Mexico and Canada from the US, which is not the same as using your phone while you are there.

Calling vs. using your phone there

Plans mean two different things by "Canada and Mexico." Calling the two countries from the US is included on many cheap plans. Using your phone while you are in Canada or Mexico, called roaming, is included only on some. Check which one your plan covers before you go.

US Mobile also sells travel add-ons for Canada and Mexico on its top plans.

Plans that include calls to Canada and Mexico

These plans cover calls from the US to both countries. Most don't include using your phone while you are there.

  • Visible ($25): unlimited calls to Mexico and Canada from the US.
  • Mint Mobile (from $15 on a 12-month plan): free calls to Mexico and Canada.
  • Ultra Mobile (from $19): talk and text in Mexico and Canada, plus unlimited calls to 90+ countries. See our Ultra Mobile review.
  • AT&T prepaid ($20 a month paid yearly): calls to Canada and Mexico from the US.

Which to get

The right plan depends on how often you go and how long you stay.

  • Occasional trips: keep your plan and buy a travel eSIM for each trip.
  • Several trips a year on a budget: Visible+ at $35 covers both countries with taxes included.
  • Family in Mexico you call often: Ultra Mobile adds calls to 90+ countries; Mint and Visible cover calls to Mexico and Canada for less.
  • Snowbirds and long stays: T-Mobile and Verizon's top plans include the most data abroad, but carriers can limit service if most of your use is outside the US for months at a time.

For a single trip, a Saily Mexico eSIM is often the cheapest option; see our best travel eSIMs for others.

Before you go

Even on a plan that includes both countries, a few steps avoid surprises.

  • Check your plan's limits. Most plans that include Canada and Mexico cap high-speed data there, then slow it.
  • Turn on Wi-Fi calling. Calls over hotel or home Wi-Fi usually count as US calls.
  • Download offline maps for the cities you're visiting, in case of weak signal.
  • Know the emergency number. 911 works in both Canada and Mexico.

Snowbirds and long stays

Plans that include Canada and Mexico are meant for travel. Carriers can limit or remove the feature if most of your use is outside the US over a period of months. If you spend the winter in Mexico or summers in Canada, a local plan in that country, or a travel eSIM for the months you are there, can be cheaper and won't put your US line at risk.

Staying for months? A mobile hotspot with a local SIM can cover a rental for less than roaming.

Family members abroad

If you mostly call relatives in Mexico or Canada rather than travel there, you don't need roaming. Mint, Visible and AT&T prepaid include calls to both countries. For calls to more countries, Ultra Mobile adds 90+ destinations, and WhatsApp or FaceTime calls over Wi-Fi cost nothing extra.
