The short answer

Ultra Mobile is a prepaid carrier on T-Mobile's network built for people who call abroad: every plan includes unlimited calls to 90+ countries and talk and text in Mexico and Canada. Plans start at $19 for 4GB; Unlimited is $49 a month, or $34 a month on a 12-month plan, with taxes extra. If you only call within the US, Mint is cheaper. See Ultra Mobile plans.

International calling

This is why people choose Ultra. Every plan includes unlimited calls from the US to more than 90 countries, including Mexico, India, China and much of Latin America, plus international texting to 200+ countries. Plans also include talk and text while you are in Mexico and Canada. Ultra adds pay-as-you-go credit for countries outside the list.

Who saves the most

If you spend $10 to $20 a month on calling cards or an international add-on with another carrier, Ultra's 4GB plan at $19 can cost less than a domestic plan plus the add-on.

Ultra Mobile vs. Mint Mobile

Both use T-Mobile's network. Mint Unlimited is $30 a month on a 12-month plan and includes calls to Mexico and Canada only. Ultra Unlimited is $34 a month on the same term, or $25 in the first year for new customers, and adds calls to 90+ countries. Pick Mint for domestic use and Ultra if you call abroad.

Coverage and speeds

Ultra uses T-Mobile's 5G and 4G LTE towers, so coverage matches T-Mobile's map. Ultra lines get lower priority than T-Mobile's own customers, so speeds can drop at busy times, and Ultra has said speeds may slow during congestion after 35GB of use in a month on Unlimited. Video streams at 480p, which looks fine on a phone screen.

How to sign up

You can sign up online in a few minutes and keep your current number.

  1. Check your phone. It must be unlocked and work on T-Mobile's network. See how to unlock your phone.
  2. Pick a plan and term. The 12-month term costs the least per month; you pay for it up front.
  3. Choose eSIM or a SIM card. eSIM activates in minutes on supported phones.
  4. Transfer your number. Get your account number and transfer PIN from your current carrier. See how to switch carriers and keep your number.

Who should skip Ultra

Ultra is the wrong pick for some people.

  • People who only call within the US: Mint Mobile costs less on the same network.
  • Verizon or AT&T customers with weak T-Mobile coverage at home: try US Mobile, which lets you pick the network.
  • Heavy hotspot users: even Unlimited+ caps hotspot at 20GB.

If you rarely call abroad, Straight Talk or Visible, Mint or US Mobile will cost less for the same data.

Questions

Does Ultra Mobile have family plans?

Yes. Ultra discounts lines added to the first one. Check Ultra's site for current multi-line prices.

Can I bring my own phone to Ultra Mobile?

Yes, if it is unlocked and works on T-Mobile's network. Most recent iPhones and Android phones do.

Is Ultra Mobile good?

It is a good choice if you call family or friends abroad, because every plan includes unlimited calls to 90+ countries. If you only call within the US, Mint Mobile on the same network costs less.

What network does Ultra Mobile use?

T-Mobile's 5G and 4G LTE network. Coverage matches T-Mobile's map, but Ultra data has lower priority than T-Mobile's own customers when towers are busy.

Is Ultra Mobile the same as Mint Mobile?

They share a parent company and both run on T-Mobile. Mint is built for cheap domestic service; Ultra adds international calling to every plan and charges more for unlimited data.

How much is Ultra Mobile unlimited?

$49 a month paid monthly, or $34 a month on a 12-month plan ($408). New customers can get the 12-month Unlimited plan for $300, or $25 a month, for the first year. Taxes are extra.

Does Ultra Mobile work in Mexico?

Yes. Plans include talk and text in Mexico and Canada, and Unlimited+ includes 5GB of data in Mexico.
