Astound data caps: which plans have them

Astound is one of the few big providers that still caps data on some plans. Here's which ones, and when it matters.

In brief

Astound's 300 Mbps plan includes 400 GB a month and 600 Mbps includes 1 TB. 1 Gig and faster have unlimited data, and 1 Gig costs $40/mo for a year (or $45 locked for life), so for heavy users the step up often costs little.

How much data households use

  • An hour of HD streaming uses about 3 GB; 4K uses about 7 GB.
  • A family streaming four hours a day in HD uses roughly 360 GB a month.
  • A large game download can be 100 GB or more.
  • Cloud backups of photos and video add up quickly in the first month.

On 300 Mbps, a household that streams every evening can reach 400 GB. On 600 Mbps, 1 TB covers most families. See data caps explained for every provider's rules.

How to avoid going over

  • Check your usage in your Astound account each month.
  • Set streaming apps to HD instead of 4K on smaller screens.
  • Schedule big game and backup downloads early in the billing cycle so you can see their effect.
  • Move to 1 Gig if you're regularly near the cap: it removes the cap entirely.

Astound compared

Most large providers no longer cap home internet: AT&T Fiber, Spectrum, Verizon, Frontier, T-Mobile and Xfinity's new plans are unlimited. Among the providers we review, caps remain at Astound (300 and 600 Mbps), GCI (250 Mbps) and some Sparklight tiers. See our Astound review and Astound Price for Life.

Astound Price for Life and caps

Astound's Price for Life option locks your price for $5/mo more. On 1 Gig that's $45/mo with unlimited data for as long as you keep the plan. If you're choosing a plan for the long term, locking 1 Gig avoids both price rises and data caps. See Astound Price for Life explained.

Moving off a capped plan

  • Check your usage over the last three months in your account.
  • Ask Astound to move you to 1 Gig at the current promo or Price for Life rate.
  • Confirm the new plan's data allowance in writing.
