The best gaming routers of 2026
Six routers for gamers at every budget, what a gaming router can and can't do for ping, and the settings that matter.
Get the TP-Link Archer GE800 for a fast plan and a busy home, or the Archer BE9700 to spend less. On a budget, the Archer AX21 is enough for plans up to about 500 Mbps. Whatever you buy, plug the console in with Ethernet. If ping stays high, the fix is usually your internet plan, not the router.

Quick picks
The picks

TP-Link Archer GE800
The top-scoring router in PC Gamer's network testing. It has a dedicated gaming port, game-traffic prioritization and enough multi-gig ports for a gaming PC, console and fast fiber plan.
Big and expensive. It only pays off on plans of 1 Gig or faster, or in busy homes.

TP-Link Archer BE900
RTINGS names it the best gaming router it has tested, with top-tier specs across the board.
Overkill for a single gamer on a sub-gig plan.

TP-Link Archer BE9700
PC Gamer's mid-range pick: the full Wi-Fi 7 feature set and strong all-round performance at a much lower price than the flagships.

Asus ROG Rapture GT-BE19000AI
Tom's Guide's top gaming router. Asus's ROG software includes game boost, port prioritization and free security, and it works with Asus AiMesh units.
More settings than most people need.

GL.iNet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000)
Runs open-source OpenWrt firmware, so you can set up detailed QoS, VPNs and custom DNS. A favorite among enthusiasts for the price.
Wi-Fi 6 only, and the interface assumes networking knowledge.

TP-Link Archer AX21
A cheap Wi-Fi 6 router that is stable enough for online play on plans up to about 500 Mbps. See more in the best routers under $50.
No multi-gig ports and basic QoS.
What a gaming router can and can't fix
A router controls traffic inside your home. It can stop a 4K stream or a big download from causing lag spikes, and it can give your console priority. It can't shorten the route to the game server or fix a slow plan. If your ping is high even with nothing else running, the problem is usually your connection; see the best internet for gaming and how to lower ping.
Plug your console or PC into the router with an Ethernet cable. A wired connection removes Wi-Fi interference entirely and does more for steady ping than any gaming feature.
Streaming games instead of downloading them? Read internet speed for cloud gaming.
Features that matter for gaming
- QoS or game prioritization: puts game traffic ahead of streams and downloads
- A 2.5 Gbps or faster port: needed to use a plan faster than 1 Gig on a wired PC
- UPnP: lets consoles open the ports they need, which avoids a strict NAT type
- Wi-Fi 7 MLO: connects over two bands at once to cut lag spikes, if your device supports it
If your ping problem is routing to distant servers, a game booster such as GearUP Booster can help; read our GearUP Booster review.
Wire the console if you can: a Cat 6 Ethernet cable costs less than any router upgrade.
Gaming router or mesh?
A gaming router works best when the console or PC sits in the same room or is wired to it. If your gaming room is two floors from the modem, mesh helps more than gaming features: wire one mesh unit to the console, or use a system with a dedicated backhaul band such as the eero Max 7. On a budget, the dual-band Deco BE25 still gives each unit 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports for a console.
How we picked
We compared published lab tests, owner reports and maker specs, and ranked on:
- Latency under load: how steady ping stays with other traffic on the network
- Ports: multi-gig WAN and LAN for fast plans and wired gaming
- Gaming features: QoS, game ports and UPnP that work without fuss
- Price: what you pay for the performance
More on our process is in how we research.
Others we considered
- Netgear Nighthawk RS600: Fast Wi-Fi 7 router in PC Gamer's testing, but expensive for what it adds over the Archer BE9700.
- TP-Link Archer BE550: A strong tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router with all 2.5 Gbps ports, close behind the BE9700.
- Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Pro: A capable Wi-Fi 6 gaming router, now outpaced by Wi-Fi 7 models at similar prices.
- eero Max 7: Fast mesh with 10 Gbps ports but no gaming features; see our eero Max 7 review.
Questions
Do I need a gaming router for PS5 or Xbox?
No. A PS5 or Xbox works with any modern router. A gaming router helps when several people stream and download while you play, because it can prioritize the console. A wired connection matters more than the router model.
Does a gaming router lower ping?
Only partly. Ping depends mostly on your internet connection and the distance to the game server. A good router helps by keeping latency steady when others in the house are streaming or downloading, using QoS to put game traffic first.
Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it for gaming?
Only if your console or PC supports it. Wi-Fi 7's multi-link operation can reduce lag spikes, but a wired Ethernet connection is still faster and steadier than any Wi-Fi.
What is the best budget gaming router?
The TP-Link Archer AX21, a Wi-Fi 6 router that costs well under $100 and handles plans up to about 500 Mbps.
Should I use mesh for gaming?
Use mesh if your gaming room is far from the router, but connect the console to the nearest mesh unit with Ethernet, or use a system with wired backhaul.
