The short answer

The eero Max 7 is for multi-gig fiber plans and homes wired with Ethernet. Its two 10 Gbps ports and tri-band Wi-Fi 7 are fast up close, but range is ordinary and it costs $599.99 per unit. On a plan of 1 Gig or less, the eero 7 or Pro 7 is the better buy. It is often discounted during Black Friday week.

Performance

Close to the router, the Max 7 is very fast; Tom's Guide measured 1.78 Gbps at 15 feet. Its weak point is range: that review found throughput fell off quickly with distance, and BroadbandNow praised its stability over benchmark numbers. In practice, the Max 7 makes the most sense in homes where the units can be linked with Ethernet, so the 10 Gbps wired backhaul carries traffic between them.

Is it overkill?

For most homes, yes. The eero 7 and eero Pro 7 use the same app and handle plans up to about 1 Gig and 2 Gig for far less. The Max 7 is for 2 Gig to 8 Gig fiber plans, homes with a 10 Gig network switch or NAS, and buyers who want eero's simplicity at the top end. If you want a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 system with more settings and free parental controls, the Asus ZenWiFi BT8 costs much less but tops out at 2.5 Gbps ports.

Most big homes on a 1 Gig plan do fine with cheaper mesh; see our picks for large homes.

Price and when to buy

List prices have not changed since launch in 2023, but Amazon discounts eero heavily around Prime Day and Black Friday. During Prime Day, Prime members saw $419.99 for one, $799.99 for two and $1,189.99 for three. Check our Black Friday mesh Wi-Fi deals before paying full price.

Pro tip

Don't pay list price. Amazon has taken 30% off during Prime Day, and eero discounts usually return during Black Friday week.

Setup tips

Use one of the 10 Gbps ports for your modem or ONT, and the other for wired backhaul or a 10 Gig switch. If your provider's gateway runs Wi-Fi, put it in bridge mode (see Xfinity bridge mode). Our mesh setup guide covers placement, and you can test Wi-Fi room by room afterward.

Pro tip

To get the full benefit of 10 Gbps, your modem or fiber box, and the cables, must support it too. Use Cat 6A or better for runs of 10 Gig.

Alternatives to consider

Asus ZenWiFi BT8
  • eero Pro 7: Same app and tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with two 5 Gbps ports per unit, for much less. The better buy on plans up to about 2 Gig.
  • eero 7: Dual-band Wi-Fi 7 with 2.5 Gbps ports, for plans up to about 1 Gig.
  • Asus ZenWiFi BT8: Tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with free security and parental controls, but 2.5 Gbps ports. Read our ZenWiFi BT8 review.
  • Asus ZenWiFi BT10: Dual 10 Gbps ports like the Max 7, with more settings and no subscription for security features.
  • TP-Link Deco BE85: TP-Link's flagship Wi-Fi 7 mesh with 10 Gbps ports, which BroadbandNow lists as costing less than the Max 7.

On a budget? The Deco BE25 is dual-band Wi-Fi 7 for about a third of the price.

Questions

Is the eero Max 7 worth it?

Only if you have a multi-gig plan or a home wired with Ethernet. Its 10 Gbps ports are what you pay for. On a plan of 1 Gig or less, the eero 7 or eero Pro 7 gives similar everyday performance for much less.

How much does the eero Max 7 cost?

$599.99 for one unit, $1,149.99 for two and $1,699.99 for three at list price. Amazon has sold a single unit for $419.99 during Prime Day.

Does eero Max 7 need eero Plus?

No, the router works without it. eero Plus, about $100 a year, adds advanced security, ad blocking, parental controls and detailed network stats.

How much area does one eero Max 7 cover?

eero rates each unit at 2,500 sq ft. Tom's Guide found speeds fell off quickly at distance, so larger or multi-floor homes usually need two.
