The short answer

Straight Talk is Verizon's prepaid brand sold at Walmart, with plans from $25 to $65 a month. The main pick, Silver Unlimited, is $45 a month or $360 for a year, and taxes and fees are extra. It is a good choice if you want to buy and pay in a store or can prepay a year. Paying month to month online, Visible costs less on the same network. See Straight Talk plans.

Verdict

Straight Talk is a reliable way onto Verizon's network, but not the cheapest one. Here is how it weighs up.

What we like
  • Verizon's network for new customers
  • Sold in every Walmart, with cash and refill-card payment
  • Annual plans cut Silver Unlimited to $30 a month
  • No contract or credit check; eSIM supported
What to know
  • Taxes and fees are added on top
  • Monthly prices are higher than Visible on the same network
  • Auto Pay discount lasts only the first three months
  • Some lines are not on Verizon and get fewer features

Plans and prices

Straight Talk sells six phone plans for one line. Silver Unlimited is the one most people should look at first.

PlanMonthlyData and hotspot
StraightSAVINGS! Nationwide$25Unlimited; bring-your-own-phone customers only
Basic Phone Plan$301,500 minutes and 100MB; flip phones only
Bronze 10GB$3510GB high-speed, then 2G speeds
Silver Unlimited$45Unlimited, 10GB hotspot
Gold Unlimited$55Unlimited, 30GB hotspot
Platinum Unlimited$65Unlimited, unlimited hotspot, roaming in Canada and Mexico

Prices for one line, before taxes and fees, from Straight Talk's phone plans page as read on Oct 8, 2026.

Auto Pay takes a little off for the first three months only: Bronze drops to $34, Silver to $42.50, Gold to $50 and Platinum to $60. Paying ahead saves more. Silver Unlimited is $120 for three months, $210 for six or $360 for a year, which works out to $30 a month.

Pro tip

If you plan to stay a year, buy the 365-day Silver plan. At $360 it costs the same per month as the $30 Basic plan and $15 less than paying Silver monthly.

Network and coverage

Straight Talk is owned by Verizon and puts new customers on Verizon's network, so coverage matches Verizon's map. The fine print says some premium features are only for customers on Verizon; lines on other networks, mostly older accounts and some phones, can get less hotspot data than the table shows. Like other prepaid brands, Straight Talk data has lower priority than Verizon's own postpaid customers when a tower is busy.

Straight Talk vs. Visible, Total Wireless and Tracfone

All four run on Verizon. Visible is the cheapest month to month at $25 with taxes included, but it is online only. Total Wireless suits families with multi-line discounts. Tracfone is cheaper for light users who need little data. Straight Talk is the pick if you want to buy and pay in a Walmart store, or if a year of Silver at $360 beats what you pay now.

Straight Talk Home Internet

Straight Talk also sells home internet on Verizon's 5G and 4G LTE network, $45 a month or $35 with a Straight Talk phone plan. Our Straight Talk Home Internet review covers the router cost and speeds.

Who should get Straight Talk

Straight Talk makes the most sense for people who value buying and paying in a store over the lowest monthly price.

  • Walmart shoppers who want to buy a phone and plan in person, or pay with cash or a refill card
  • People who can prepay a year for the $30-a-month Silver price
  • Verizon customers who want the same towers without a contract

Skip it if you only pay month to month: online brands on Verizon cost less and include taxes. If you want a new phone with your plan, see this month's best phone deals.

Calling abroad a lot? Ultra Mobile includes international calls, and these plans cover Canada and Mexico.

How to sign up and pay

You can start Straight Talk service in a store or entirely online.

  • In store: Walmart sells Straight Talk SIM kits, phones and refill cards, and staff can help activate a line.
  • Online or in the app: buy a plan, activate an eSIM and transfer your number from another carrier.
  • Refills: pay by card, with Auto Pay, or with a refill card bought with cash. Multi-month plans renew less often.

Moving your number? See how to switch carriers and keep your number, and check your phone is unlocked first with how to unlock your phone.

Which Straight Talk plan to pick

Match the plan to how much data and hotspot you use; paying for a year lowers the monthly cost of any of them.

  • Light users with a flip phone: Basic at $30.
  • Light smartphone users: Bronze 10GB at $35.
  • Most people: Silver Unlimited at $45, or $360 for a year.
  • Heavy hotspot users or travelers to Canada and Mexico: Platinum at $65.
