What changes, and what doesn't

  • Your speed stays the same. The higher price doesn't come with an upgrade.
  • No warning. Spectrum generally doesn't send a notice when the promo ends, so note your start date.
  • Still no contract or data cap. You can cancel or change plans at any time.
  • Advanced WiFi stays $10/mo on Internet 100 and 500 (included on 1 Gig).
  • The free mobile line ends after 12 months of bill credits.

Why did my Spectrum bill go up?

Check your bill for these, roughly in order of how often they cause the jump:

  • Your 12-month promo ended. The plan moves to Spectrum's standard rate, about $20 to $35 a month more (table above).
  • The free mobile line ended. The Unlimited line is free through 12 months of bill credits; after that it's billed at the regular price unless you cancel or change it.
  • Advanced WiFi. $10/mo on Internet 100 and 500. Your own router removes it.
  • TV fees. If you also have Spectrum TV, the broadcast TV and sports surcharges are set separately from the plan price and can rise.
  • Taxes and one-time charges. Activation, a technician visit or a late fee shows up as a separate line.

Our guide to reading your internet bill explains each line. If the promo ending is the cause, the steps below usually get part of it back.

How to keep the price down

What it costs over three years

With the estimates above, Internet 500 costs about $480 in year one and about $900 a year after, roughly $2,280 over three years. A $50 plan with a 5-year lock, like T-Mobile 5G Home Rely or AT&T Fiber 300, costs $1,800. See the true cost of internet over 3 years and our Spectrum review.

What to say when you call

  • "My promo ended and my bill went from $40 to about $75."
  • "[Competitor] offers [speed] for [price] at my address."
  • "I'd like to stay if you can match it. What can you offer?"
  • Ask for retention or cancellations if the first agent can't help, and get the new price and its end date in writing.

Ways to keep a lower price longer

  • Bundle Spectrum Mobile: Spectrum's bundle pricing can keep a discount on internet beyond the first year; ask what applies at your address.
  • Drop Advanced WiFi: on 100 and 500 Mbps it's $10/mo; your own router can replace it.
  • Lower your tier: 100 Mbps covers one or two people streaming.
  • Low-income households: Spectrum Internet Assist has a fixed price; see low-income internet programs.

Is switching worth it?

If fiber or 5G with a long price lock reaches you, switching often costs less over three years. Use our switching guide and keep Spectrum until the new service works.

Questions

Why did my Spectrum bill go up?

Usually because the 12-month promo price ended and the plan moved to the standard rate. Other common causes: the free mobile line's 12 months of credits ended, the $10/mo Advanced WiFi fee, and higher TV surcharges if you have Spectrum TV.

How much does Spectrum internet go up after the first year?

Spectrum doesn't publish its standard rates. Independent sources report about $20/mo more on Internet 100 and about $35/mo more on Internet 500 and 1 Gig.

Does Spectrum tell you when your promo ends?

Generally no. Note your start date and check your bill around month 11.

Can I get the promo price again?

The online promo is for new customers. Existing customers can ask for a retention offer, especially if another provider serves their address.

Can existing Spectrum customers get a better price?

Often, yes. Retention offers aren't published, but customers who name a competitor that serves their address frequently get a lower rate.
