In brief

The fastest home internet plans in the US are 8 Gig from gFiber (Edge 8 Gig) and Brightspeed (select areas), 7 Gig from Frontier, and 5 Gig from AT&T Fiber ($110/mo) and Verizon Fios. All are fiber with matching upload speeds. Most households are well served by 500 Mbps to 1 Gig.

Do you need multi-gig?

Probably not yet. A single 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps, and a busy family rarely uses more than a few hundred megabits at once. Multi-gig plans help in a few situations:

  • Several people uploading large files, such as video editors or photographers.
  • Home servers, large cloud backups or frequent game downloads of 100 GB or more.
  • Homes with many devices on Wi-Fi 7 and wired 10 Gbps networking.

To actually see 5 or 8 Gbps, you need a computer with a 10 Gbps network port or a Wi-Fi 7 device close to the router; most laptops top out well below that over Wi-Fi. See what internet speed you need and router speed for your plan.

Why upload speed matters more than the headline number

Most providers advertise download speed. For video calls, cloud backups and sending large files, upload speed is what you feel. Fiber gives you the same speed in both directions; cable plans often upload at 20 to 50 Mbps even on gigabit tiers. Mediacom, for example, uploads at 50 Mbps on its Gig plans.

What the fastest plans cost per month

Multi-gig prices have come down. AT&T Fiber 5 Gig is $110/mo, and Quantum's 3 Gig is $70/mo in select markets. Most fiber providers include a Wi-Fi 7 router on their fastest tiers, and many add a long price guarantee: Frontier and Fios lock 1 Gig and faster for five years.

How to get the fastest speed you pay for

  • Plug your main computer into the router with an Ethernet cable rated for the speed (Cat 6 or better for multi-gig).
  • Use the provider's Wi-Fi 7 router, or one that matches your plan.
  • Test with a wired connection before calling support about slow speeds.
  • Place mesh extenders within good range of the router, not at the far edge of the signal.

Questions

What is the fastest internet speed available in the US?

The fastest home plans sold to US households are 8 Gig, from gFiber (Edge 8 Gig) and Brightspeed in select areas. Frontier sells 7 Gig, and AT&T Fiber and Verizon Fios sell 5 Gig.

How do I find the fastest internet at my address?

Enter your address in our address check. Fiber availability changes street by street, so the fastest plan at your address can differ from your neighbor's.

Is 5 Gig internet worth it?

For most homes, no. 500 Mbps to 1 Gig covers streaming, gaming and remote work. 5 Gig helps households that upload large files or run home servers, and only with devices that can use it.

What is the fastest cable internet?

Cable tops out lower than fiber. Mediacom sells 2 Gig, and Xfinity offers multi-gig tiers in select areas. Cable uploads are much slower than fiber.
